Epitome Overture Patent !?!

Hii all,

Just read the thread on FW dragging Overture to the court on its Patent...!
Also breezed thru' the patent info provided by one of the members here...thanks for the link..!

But on the whole..the entire thing was going above my head...

I would like to know...
1. For what exactly Overture holds the patent...
..Is it for the whole concept of PPC...?
..Is it for the retrieval of a result based upon a request from a databse..With overture kind of environment..??

..or is it totatlly different...??

Does it mean that Only Overture can run a PPC..??

Some one please explain this to me..!

Overture can continue the use of ppc, however being sued for patent claims (functions) which are suppose to be exclusive to the patent. Its very flimsy and will be settled out of court. Patent claims are timely, confusing and extremely costly in court, due to their technical content.

Now for my problem.....

we are getting clobbered on overture due to automatic bidding programs. our competitors alter bids every 15 seconds when necessary! who has these engines?

yeah..I understand, Overture can continue to use the ppc...since the patent belongs to them...

But what about othet ppc's out there...after reading goto's patent...I get a feeling nobody other than overture can run a ppc search engine...

Am I understanding correct...??

I do not think so. Is the wheel patented?

I remember that the first worksheet was Lotus 123; everybody copied and pasted their technology.. (4 pro, Excel..). And what about Window to Mac System?

Lotus 123 wasn't the first - Visicalc was. Lotus struck me as a direct rip-off, but they might have bought out Visicorp.

That reminds me of the Invisicalc product - you imagined your computer booting up and sat there thinking about your financial woes...
