After the launch of GoTo UK on November 3rd, they are planning to expand into Germany in early 2001 and other European countries in the not too distant future.

Oh God! Just as I thought I was on top of things... Another one. I guess I'll have to read up on all the discussions about GoTo now. Thanks for the warning rpking! And keep us posted. UK will be their first haunt I see.

>UK will be their first haunt

It may be their last rencke, I really can't see the GoTo model being a success over here and certainly not at this time. I'm sure that they would have done the requisite market research but the market over here is different, we simply don't have the numbers of small web site owners/affiliate marketers that are needed.

Having said that if it works in the UK, then Bingo they have a real product on their hands.

IMHO

I agree with NFFC.
I don't know how they can justify this at the moment - especially based upon the "rates" indicated. The site has got to (not goto) deliver volumes of search potential.

If you check the main Goto [goto.com] site you;ll see the note at the bottom about hooking up with affiliates. This may be the opening.

As I view what I do as being a 'new media' marketing agency (how's that for an alternative to SEO). I view my job as getting my clients listings and am willing to dabble in any area to get them top rankings. SEO is the most satisfying way, but not the only way. Mainly because, in my limited experience, clients are so delighted to get ANY top listing (at this stage) that they boost their own traffic by boasting about the fact that 'we are in the top 10 on .......".

So I do go for any paid listing with anyone I consider isn't going to be a total ripoff (just35 need not apply) and I consider may have a chance for my clients and give them rankings, hopefully some traffic and also 'kudos'.

I agree that goto has probably got its' model wrong here and beleive that espotting have a better chance - however that hasn't stopped me calling the 0800 number and speaking to a very nice person in California who noted my existing goto account number and was very helpfull! I've put some money down for my own site and will judge what happens. If I have clients who sell 'diadactic convertors' for £250 (only an example) and it costs 5p to get them a person who wants this product AND they get a sale - this is a good deal for my client.

Carping about the fact that this is costing 7 times more than in the US is (IMHO) unimportant. I'm here to help our client base sell their products.

I've paid the money, I'll look at the results I get and (if it works) I'll be the first to put my clients on goto UK.

Am I wrong in my philosophy?

Not in my opinion, just that I don't think there are enough people like you to "support" a UK GoTo.

NFFC - Probably true!

Long week and the above diatribe was due to coming back from the pub full of Guinness and getting confused on the threads about GoTo UK!

If it does or does not work however, I'll be the first to let you all know.

Adding to NFFC's comment, I would guess that the same goes for mainland Europe as well. But on the other hand, GoTo just might be ahead of their time. Europe is perhaps two years behind the US at this point, and who in USA would have considered paying for placement in 1998?

Maybe I had better read up on GoTo after all?

With enough traffic, goto should work. It'll just take time for goto to build a profile. At the moment, I'd think the uk site would do better to get it's profile raised before making it "expensive" for advertisers to take part. Expensive is relative to the US model.

Position 1 in any search resource is next to useless without traffic.

I guess this is likely to cause a lot of commotion over at the UK forum [webmasterworld.com]after Nov 3, so that would be a good place for us mainlanders to see what's ahead, right?
