excerpt from email:

Effective immediately, we will only accept listings for search terms
if the Web site provides substantial content that is clearly reflective
of the search term. If a site contains content in the form of a text
link, banner, or tile that directs users to another Web site, it will
no longer be considered substantial content. To be in compliance with
this guideline, there must also be a direct relationship between the
search term and the main purpose of the Web site. Beginning October 8,
2001 we will start to review existing search listings to ensure they
meet this new guideline.

Hmmm, I wonder if this would include buying your competitor's company name as a PPC keyword?

Well this is the end of affiliate marketing on Goto. Are they trying to make money, or do they really want to be a 'good search engine'? This is going to knock out some very competitive affiliate based sites.

Yes, a very hard knock to most affiliate sites. I doubt GoTo really has the resources to patrol/edit existing listings, but competitors may do it for them.

So if your site has affiliate links you will be booted ? Looks like goto wants to be judge of and jurry for the search engines top spots ....

What is considered content will be left to them and info on content judged as to whether it qualifies as content at all .... It all has to do with them changing names also I would bet. Last I knew they had many lawsuits pending on various advertising related issues could this be a rouge to change names and try and bring back a new face ? Well it will reduce the money they make, as for increased relevancy .... Increased relevancy for advertising is still only advertising when your all done and through ! Advertising relevancy is pretty accurate on goto but it is just that, advertising no more, no less.

So as and example if I am in billy bobs rib shack affiliate program, and I advertisisng under cheese cake and ribs mail delivery as well as have 3 other air delivery catering companies then I no longer can buy a listing on goto ? Well what if billy bob and the cheescake overnight company do not want to place a link on goto and would rather we do it for them ? How does goto have a right to determine who can advertise for who ? I mean is this not a monopolistic view ? We can only advertise for our own company but goto can advertise anyone they feel like ? All and all it is advertising and no matter what the relevancy it is advertising. The terms set fourth also were a little vague ....

Or do I have this wrong and are these new rules set so I could not buy the term for billy bobs ribs url such as billb0bsribs.whatever or billy bobs ribs as term with a link to his page ?

I would guess it is more for the latter but it still very vague. So if I bought the keywords ribs, and have a bunch of info on ribs as well as a affiliate link to billy bob I am ok ? LOL

All I can say is I hope the latter is ok cause otherwise Billy Bob is not gonna be to happy !

imo, YES

1) If you own your something-ribs.domain
2) If you can get it by directory editors [looking for relevant content] you will pass the test @ GoTo.
3) If you are denied, appeal.

Mike,

Thanks I thought that was going to be ok .... But if I have a table as my content say with top 10 rib shacks in the world this may or may not make it from what I have deducted ... I guess it is like you said whatever you can get past the editor.

Ok all this talk about food has made me hungry going to make dinner before I do anymore se work LOL ...

>that directs users to another Web site

I feel it is a direct counter strike at ppc SEO'ers who are reselling traffic. Notice the emphasis on redirects. That is the basis for all ppc seo going today. Goto wants that back.

I don't see Goto being super-picky about this if the content is reasonably relevant. As Brett noted, redirected traffic is probably one significant issue. Also, Goto has to create a balance between offering the most useful search results and letting every search term be a bidding free-for-all with no rules.

If people search at Goto and get results they aren't happy with, they will use other engines. They don't use Goto because of its PPC model, they use it because the results are relevant. I don't use Goto much, but if I'm shopping for a product I will often give it a whirl.

Goto is no doubt mindful of other SE slides due to poor search results. It does them little good to earn an extra 2 cents a click if the higher bidder's site is a turn-off to searchers. Too many bum clicks, and the searchers will use another engine or avoid results identified as "sponsored".

It appears that similar email was send out by then Goto at the beginning of October. It is not clear to me if this new rules are the same ones that they were talking about in October? Also has anybody had their existing listings removed so far?

What if you've built two pages on your site discussing the affiliate product(s) and its benefits. Page two would have links that open a javascript popup window which takes you to the affiliate. Wouldn't that be considered viable content?

What if you've built two pages on your site discussing the affiliate product(s) and its benefits. Page two would have links that open a javascript popup window which takes you to the affiliate. Wouldn't that be considered viable content?

It can be considered viable if you complete the following checklist:
1. Pray to your chosen deity about the state of the goto reviewer's hair.(if athiest skip to step 2)

2. go to step 4

3. Ensure your website has some relevant content(item description, etc).

4. Submit your keywords

5. Within 12 hours you will be declined for all your requested keywords, the reason will be "other", "else", or "PMS".

6. Consult the email you recieved notifying you of the declination, locate the name of your personal decliner. (in rare cases overture may use the terminology "reviewer", dont worry, this is just legal jargon, you can saftely assume both mean the same thing)

7. Type "Remington Hairdryer" into google and purchase said appliance. For shipping address, enter the following:
[name of your personal decliner],
Overture/Goto,
PPC Alley,
Ghosttown.

For the zip code find the highest bid for overture's zip code and increase this figure by 4.75 to ensure that your package is delivered within the first 3 packages, this will ensure that your package is also sent to overture's partners.

Regards,
William

[This is simply a vent, do not actually send it to your personal decliner, send it to the CEO as a hint, along with a bottle of midol]
