GoTo Top Bidded Keywords

High Bids

I did a search for the word 'data recovery' on Goto.com and was shocked at what advertisers are paying for 1 click. $15.51 per click! wow! I also did a search for 'incorporation' and the top bid was $11.00!

Does anyone know any more highly competetive words on GoTo.com where advertisers are paying large click-thru rates(above $5.00 per click)?

<Why bother paying $13.46 more per click for no reason? >....

I call it knee capping. Some people monitor the bids twice a day, and some may monitor every hour. If you see a pattern of when someone changes bids, you can bid real high, wait for him to react, and then slide underneath with a low bid.

A more fitting phrase might be "knee padding"...

In another thread someone mentioned their turnaround is one sale for about 60 unique hits. One of our site's is about 1/100. Our favored keywords on goto's top position is $5.00. Our product sells for $13.00. Our top competitors price is right there at $14.00. At that rate we would loose $487.00 per sale. Come to think of it, our competitors are loosing $486.00 per sale unless their turnaround is a *lot* better than ours. That kinda makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. :)

I have also noticed that a lot of bidders in my categories are paying much more than they have to to be number 1.

Pretty foolish not to check once in a while....

There are many who go bulk buy a keyword and all it's relatives. Then they only check the main kw. They could have purchased dozens of kw's like that and never checked the siblings.

Hi Brett_Tabke,

Just wondering if you could provide us with an updated list. I've noticed a lot of changes since your last post.

NOT only is GoTo expensive to compete in, if you dont spend $20 in a month, they take it out of your account anyway.

This puts me off in a BIG way. I refuse to spend ridiculous amounts to be in the top 3 or 5 and am happy to be number 7 or even 10. I set a limit to the amount I will spend in exchange for a hit and I stick to it - by using this principle and spreading it around as many ppc's as possible, I usefully supplement the traffic derived from my SEO successes.

After a month with GoTo, I've only spent $15 - and they go and charge me $20 anyway.

When my account dries up, I'll be heading for pastures new, and I'll be putting GoTo down to experience.

They might have proved their business model, and pioneered a concept, but their 'imitators' are doing much better for me.

I got into a bidding war on goto.com a while ago. The cost per click soon outweighed the ROI for both of us... so I emailed the web manager and struck up an agreement to share top spot on a monthly basis. This works quite well, providing the keywords/terms are niche and the 3rd place bid stays static.

More co-operation from bidders would see an end to crazy prices.

hi Jackwheeliebin & welcome to WmW

nice approach, although I don't think that would work that often, but it is a rather amusing thought to contact the webmaster with the higher bid and set up some agreement to reduce bids overall.

This would realy get the likes of Goto spitting feathers :)

Welcome jackwheeliebin
That is a good idea. It will work every time IF you know exactly what the bidders ROI is in advance. And many of us can figure that out in advance. [read, affiliate sites]

This is a first post so I hope it's OK.

I called up another bidder to cut a deal but did a little test first, I did him up and he followed about every two hours but when I slipped back under him he didn't respond and burned up some cash with bid about twice as high as necessary. I gave him a call and hinted to him that he could make a saving. "Thank you very much" he says and we struck a bargin, and he's held to it. OK that time.

Top this!

charity: $50

I have a feeling this isn't a 'real' bid, but it looks crazy anyway.

A search for "disaster" also lists the top site @$50.00. These are public service listings.

Well seeing that #2 for "disaster" is paying .47 cents it is very safe to assume that the bid for #1 of $50.00 is a typo and shoud read .50 cents.

I also notice they have stopped hiding "data recovery" (it and several other top bid kw's had the price not showing for a few weeks).

How often are the top bidded terms fed to other search engine databases?

Because, really, to get the most bang for the buck, you'd want to bid on your terms right before 'feeding time'. Even if it was a daily feed, you might be able to bid on the top spot for say, an hour just to get the top spot fed everywhere else.

Or, have I just figured out something that y'all figured out a long time ago?

I think GoTo has done this or that particular site has asked for some help from GoTo to get the site listed above all in lui of the recent terrorist attacks.

bartek said, "These are public service listings."

I agree, I would assume that they're not being charged for the clicks. GoTo is contributing in the best way it can, by directing people to the site to give donations.

grnidone, it's all live data being fed from Goto. When you are added - you are added to them all.
