Is it ok for a competitor bid "desperately" on our domain name? ie (domainname) on sale. Fast shipping on (domainname). we dont have a trademark registered or applied yet.

Try contacting the customer service from the email the domain is registered for and explain the situation, without mentioning trademarks, but just the fact that you own that domain name they're bidding on. Are they actually bidding on the domain including the extension or just the domain? (Widget or widget.com?)
It's worth a shot anyway!
