I searched for this but could not really find a complete answer.

For standard match they say the ad shows for:
* singular/plural variations of your keywords
* common misspellings of your keywords
* topics that are highly relevant to your keywords
* topics that are highly relevant to your titles and descriptions

For advanced:

The Advanced match type drives additional targeted leads to your business from our high-quality partner network of sites. It helps you grow your business while saving you time and effort by displaying your listings for a broader range of searches relevant to your keywords, titles and descriptions and/or web content. And because you have the ability to track and refine your results specifically for this match type, you'll have the information necessary to keep your ROI on track.

"High-quality partner sites" sounds exactly like content match. Is advanced really the same as content match? If not, I don't know what could really be more "advanced" than plurals and misspellings.

I know most people here recommend against advanced match but I want to test it anyway.

Advanced picks up variations of your base keywords. So if you have a keyword for "red widgets", advanced would display your ad if someone entered the search "large high mileage red widgets". Advanced can be useful and will return a good ROI as long as you are careful to exclude words that would not bring traffic relevant to your product. One of the most common of these words for many products is the word "free". Most advertisers would not want someone to visit their site who entered "free red widgets".

Standard match includes singulars, plurals and misspellings. Advanced match can include just about anything under the sun.

Advanced match: Avoid. Like. Plague.

Unfortunatly this is for an affiliate site that I cannot really track so I just have to go by feel and number of sales.

I turned advanced match on yesterday and had my best day ever. Today sales were much more moderate but the YSM clicks were 3x higher and 3x more expensive. I just turned it off again. It does sound like a scam to me but I had to test it.

Thanks for the input.
