Paying for keywords that I should be able to exclude

With Google, I can avoid mistargeted, locale specific searches by adding popular city/states as negative keywords, i.e.:

"widgets" - Ad is served
"arizona widgets" - Ad is not served due to negative keyword on "arizona".

With AdWords, I can accomplish this with a large list of negative keywords that includes ~48 states and most large cities where we do not do much business.

With PrecisionMatch, I am limited to 45 excluded words.

Any way around this?

would it be quicker to turn precision match off (as in limited to the exact keywords you've put) insted of the broad match?

Actually the solution in Overture would be to turn "advanced match" off, and only bid on specific keyword phrases you want traffic on.

I never put much thought into the 45 limit before, but I like to measure ROAS/ROI on each term individually, so I rarely use advanced match.

If I turn off Precision Match then I will miss too many opportunities that I can't specifically target... i.e. "[comptetitor] widget services"

We said turn off "Advanced Match" within Precision Match, not Precision Match itself.

Then add keywords for your specific terms you want to bid on.

Sorry, got confused. I meant "Advanced match". Looking through our ROI reports, I would be losing business unless I added every single one of our competitors (in the 1,000's).

I guess I have no choice but to pay for the local searches.

We track some extremely large Overture campaigns, a few in excess of a million terms..

You only get charged when someone clicks, I'd set up your account, exactly the way you want it. :)
