Is it possible to ever get banned from Overture?

Hi everyone,

Just found this great forum!

I have a question. I hope that someone can put me more at ease with Overture than I feel at the moment.

I use Overture UK and have had many listings approved only to all be suddenly removed one month later for "no content" reason even though I thought that there was sufficient content, etc. I was asked if I wanted my money back and if I wanted to close my account there and then.

Anyway, I redid the pages increasing the content for the keywords in question and got most of my listings back.

The dilemma now is that Overture provides 50% of my traffic and I would like to bid on other keywords but I am so nervous that one day I will get an email again saying that all my listings are removed for some reason.

Can someone please put me at rest? I have never had this problem before with any other PPC engines.

I cannot afford to lose my listings again.

It seems to me that when I submit new listings they get approved and then another person is assigned to then go over all my approved listings again to double check, etc, and sometimes depending on the reviewer they can have a different opinion of what is approvable? Has this been anybody elses experience?

Thanks for all feedback.

The editorial rules change often. If you make any amendments to listings then you place them back in the queue and you have to be measured against the rules in place today and not the historical ones.

Advertisers can get told they are no longer welcome, but this would be the exception rather than the rule.

As long as you are sensitive to the fact that decisions are not personal, and that you can always appeal and dispute decisions, you should be OK.

My one question would be why Overture are over 50%?

Thanks Webdiversity.

I still feel nervous though. Last night after submitting the post I took a look through past posts in the forum and noticed one in February/March this year when everyone was talking about similar experiences.

Why 50%? It is because I have just been hit a little by Google and because of the nicheness (if there is such a word!) of my industry, Overture seems to work well for it.

Over 50% suggests to me that your tracking systems are not talking to each other. Your own logs/tracking is probably not picking up many of your visitors. If you are using logs then that would explain much. That aside, I would suggest:

1) Google Adwords is very similar to Overture. We spend similar amounts on each.

2) Espotting is still generating good traffic

3) Mirago's system is so darn cool that I really feel some big player should just buy it and put it in their results.

4) Webfinder also has a result or two on Freeserve.

Spread your wings - getting all your traffic from one source is not a sound business strategy - just ask all those getting nuked in the Florida update.

But in answer to your question, Webdiversity is right. Avoid taking Overture's editorial decisions personally and you will sleep better at night. Their interests are - in the main - the same as yours. Get as many visitors to your site as they can. But they are very aware that their reach and reputation is very highly linked to relevency. So, check out their guidelines and be ready to re-submit quickly if they take sites off. You can also see what they have taken off somewhere in the reports along with the reason.
