The other day someone asked a question about the search term suggestion tool at Overture. I posted a reply that at least one didn’t agree with. It was about how they arrived at their numbers on how many searches are done the previous month for a particular keyword or phrase.
I just got off the phone with Overture with their clear-cut answer. They said that the stats on the searches done on a particular keyword or phrase the previous month is taken from the searches done on search engines that are affiliated with Overture. For example if you do a search on Yahoo for the keyword “Cars”. You are actually doing two searches at the same time. One for Google that is supplying Yahoo with the results, and the other search is being done for Overture so they can list the correct sponsor, who has paid for the top listings on the keyword “Cars”.
Overture clams to be at lease a participant in 80% of all searches on the Internet. I’m not sure I believe 80%, but that is what they are saying. Just thought you would like to know how they arrive at those numbers.
Keep in mind that the information above is straight from Overture.
