I've noticed strange keyword phrase wording...

People look for:

3683: "longest sale world widget"
2078: "longest widget sale"
641: "world largest widget sale"

how can that be explained? The first phrase doesn't even make sense to search for :)

<edit>if you are wondering about subj, that was supposed to be "wording"</edit>

Overture often seems to place the words in search phrases in a curious random order. Just a quirk of the term suggestion tool, I guess.

It seems that it does it only for keywords longer than 3 words.

Is that true? Have anyone else noticed that before?

Just did a search for "widget" (really!) using the term suggestion tool. How about these ...

24 capture dv widget
18 symbol widget
15 gizmo widget
7 data sheridan widget
5 symbol widget writing

They all look a bit suspect to me. And they are all 3 words long or less :)

What you're seeing here is Overture's matching system at work.

Their matching will deliver the same set of results to singular searches, plurals, spelling variations, etc. different word order, and so on. They also lump the variations together in the reports, and because the matching system hides the details of spelling, punctuation or even word order that people actually used, the reports can be pretty strange sometimes.

Overture's matching means that you don't have to worry about forgetting to bid on a variation that a searcher might use, but on the other hand the contortions in the reporting makes the search term suggestions useless for anything but Overture.

I don't know ... they are a pretty useful starting point for traditional SEO too.

What I also was wondering, where does OV get their results? From PPC SE that they work with?

So actual numbers in, lets say, Google, will vary?

Actually, the seach suggestion would look more like this:

3683: "longest sale widget world"
2078: "longest sale widget"
641: "largest sale widget world"

OV's tool alphabatizes the words in a keyword phrase. People don't actually search for them in that order. It is a result of match driver, which will alphabatize the searcher's search phrase in order to match.

You can use them in Google if you are using broad match, but you need to verify order on wordtracker for any targeted searches.

OV gets their results from their partners, so they are to be used as a guidline, not fact. Google is not one of their partners. ;)
