"With analysts' concerns lingering about the effectiveness of online advertising -- and about the staying power of Internet content pure-plays at all -- GoTo is betting big to make sure 2001 won't be a rehash of the previous year's fortunes."

mike,

i dont get the bigstep one. as far as i can tell, all it says is "bigstep customers can now bid on goto". um, whoop-tee-doo. so can everyone else, right?

sounds more like "just another press release" to me...

prediction: look for goto to try to position themselves as "the doubleclick of cpc"...

it'll be interesting to see how doubleclick responds to the changing marketplace... for now, the question is "will cpc last?"

"GoTo's monthly unique traffic had grown only 7.4 percent from last year, as opposed to 24.2 percent for Yahoo! and 50.1 percent for Excite."

Sounds like the surfers are voting with their mouse.

the b2b articles seem to indicate that GoTo realizes it cant "make it" as a pure portal, and probably not as a search engine, per se.

so instead they seem to be trying to reposition themselves (hence my "doubleclick of cpc" comment).

very interesting. evolve or die, as the theory goes...
