By the way, Findwhat and Overture partner with spyware companies, including Gator. They will not see my advertising dollars until these "problems" are fixed. While I welcome the challenge to Google, I will ONLY give google my ppc money right now.
O biggest vulnerability was its lack of search properties they owned, yet they ignored critics and just kept investing in ppc infrastructure.
And lets not forget, Y now will own all its PPC revenues. They had half of this transaction paid for just based up current PPC trends on the Y property itself.
I'd like to be a fly on the wall at Microsoft and the Googleplex :)
Remember, it was not the lack of money that "left us" with the engines we have today. There are some pretty good engineers at Google, Ink and FAST that had all they need for many years to develop good engines. Even with loads of money MSN will not be able to compete with that overnight :)
Dont underestimate them, Maybe people forget how much money Microsoft really have.
Was it 40 billion in cash?
I think Microsoft could have bought yahoo, google, overture and every other competitor ten times over.
Its going to be very interesting what develops
All Yahoo did was improve their position and prepare for a battle that previously they were hardly considered a contender in.
They could make it easier and more integrated to use MSN
They WILL make it easier and have it integrated with their new OS. I don't think MS are that stupid to stop searching on other search engines. They would be dead in the water ;-)
They could be really a pain and make msn the default homepage and you are not able to change it. That could happen. We'll just have to sit and wait.
Been a very active year for SEO's already and hopefully changes in the Google Dominence are afoot. Not that I'm saying I don't like or use google but we need some competition.
GOOGLE - vs - YAHOO - vs - MSN
Sounds like a good lineup. *rubs hands together*

If what you're saying here is going to happen - it will look like this:
Yahoo! Group:
Organic SE: Inktomi/fast
Paid Inclusion/XML: Inktomi/fast
PPC: Overture
Other Media properties & parnters:
-Altavista
-Overture
-Current Overture partners who will not leave
Google:
Organic SE: Google Search
Paid Inclusion/XML: None yet
PPC: Adwords
Other Media properties & parnters:
-Ask.com
-Netscape
-AOL
-Other Google Partners
-Overture partners that leave
MSN:
Organic SE: MSN
Paid Inclusion/XML: MSN
PPC: MSN / Findwhat/espotting
Other Media properties & parnters:
-The 'small' microsoft network
-Overture partners that leave
I hope MS eat them all for breakfast.
It was the Dept. of Justice that was involved in the Microsoft case. No doubt Yahoo is savvy enough and familiar enough with precedents to know how to avoid going in that direction.
It was the FTC that was behind the "suggestion" that the difference between paid and free search results be made clear to not be deceptive. That's probably more of a vulnerability and will have to be played right.
And what's to stop Yahoo from selling one of the properties off? Between Yahoo and Google having the dominant share there's no way MSN could catch up in time.
Google has pretty much dis-enchanted most SEO's over the last 6 months in order to boost up their Google Adwords. Then whore's out Adwords to content sites.
MSN begins to increase traffic, test their own spider, and still uses LookSmart and Overture for paid ads and top placements on popular key terms. I expect MSN to develop their own paid inclusion when they drop Inktomi. MSN usually buys rather than develop though, so I don't know who they would take, but perhaps Findwhat and Espotting for their PPC and spider.
Dogpile and Ah-Ha have partnered up with paid inclusion for a whole bunch of crappy traffic sites. So even junk traffic is going to cost. Trellian is even getting in on the game with a half dozen or so junk traffic sites selling paid inclusion.
Ah-Ha, Findwhat, and Overture all have paid advertising on spyware just to insure that your ROI takes a hit.
Does anybody else feel we are going to PAY PAY PAY by the end of 2004? I recommend that everybody develop an ROI strategy right away. THIS IS GONNA GET UGLY!

You can opt out of having your results in Gator. If you contact Overture they will do that for you. I'm not sure about the others.
