First, how much traffic has happened since you paused the Overture campaign? Is the copy the same for the two ads?
Are you tracking purchases by keyword & search engine / and or referrer variable?
If so, they you can get a 100% accurate picture of where the purchases actually originated...
Depending on the industry, one or the other might make you better ROI for your marketing dollars, but based on only 1 simple variable it's way too early to jump to the conclusion that Overture traffic converts better.
It might :) but, you need to know that and not simply make a 'guess'.
Well that’s hard to answer seeing that we started another campaign to drive 100,000 hits to our site in a month.

I’m not sure how I would know which keywords are bringing in the people that are actually buying.

Well at this point in the game it’s all a ‘guess’ isn’t it?
There are lots out there, try searching for something like, "pay per click tracking" or something similar.
For some of my sites, for example, they will click - then leave - then come back, and 'close' the deal. In that case, without a 'cookie' or similar, it's all but impossible to tell where that visitor came from after they made their purchase.
What you can do if you don't want a 3rd party solution, is watch the 'referrer' variable when you get traffic. Log the info from their browser, referrer, ip, and a unique ID or something for a database.
Then, give them a cookie. If their browser supports cookies, you can develop over time a much better way of seeing where your purchases are originating.
Overture is actually going to release a product like this at some point in the next few months. They bought a company - Key Lime, I believe - which will form the basis for their new product.
With that product, or one on the market now, or a custom solution, you would have all the keys you need to unlock the mysteries of your demographics & buying patterns from your various tracking sources.
