Does anyone have a list of the affiliates that the PPC engines use over and above their headline partners such as yahoo, ask jeeves, AOL, msn, altavista, kalko etc etc?

By "affiliates", do you mean "search partners"?

If yes, drop them a mail and ask them about their partners. Mention that as an advertiser, you would like to know where your ads will be displayed.

If they do not reply to the mail or if they give a twisted response, it is probably not worth putting your money there.

If Overture or FindWhat were to give out the list the marketing departments of the 399+ PPCs would be on those partners in an instant.

If you read in this forum that some website owners get good results from a PPC, then you can make your decision based on that data.

At one point each of them had at least 1000 partner sites. They did publish the # at one point in time.

from conversations with 2 of the biggest PPC companies on this topic.

The 1 thing that I am now picking up is that they are dropping bad quality affiliates like flies.

Espotting have been very aggresive in this situation, and a number of the bad sites which were (supposedly) sending us traffic have now been dropped.

At the end of the day, if advertisers are not happy with the traffic, they will spend their $$$s elsewhere.

I am pleased to see the PPC companies cleaning up their act.

Some of the second rung PPCs (on the other side of Overture and FindWhat) mention that their search partners include CNET/Excite and so on. Dig a little deeper and you will figure out that users need to jump through a couple of hoops to get to the second rung PPCSE's search results. Users generally need to click on "See more sponsored links" or something similar to that - The main search results are delivered by OVER/FWHT

Shak is spot on.

We noticed quite a few of those poor quality traffic providers and to Espotting's enormous credit they allow you to say you don't want the traffic from those in future. This doesn't just apply to the smaller providers but you could say you didn't want traffic from Yahoo or AJ or whoever.

There is no point introducing stringent relevancy checks for advertisers and allowing any site to carry traffic in whatever way they want.

One thing I've noticed though is on a few occasions when clicking a Google ad we have been taken straight to the Espotting page relating to that particular product/service, so it's like you get 10 for the price of 1. This seems a bit naughty to me, what do others think?

Jim,

You bring an interesting point here. 1 that has been raised with Espotting as this was my major gripe.

Luckily they are dealing with the situation, and can only improve if advertisers notify them of these situations.

I am sure things will get better.
