I'm just starting to try my hand at PPC advertizing. I've run a pretty successful, at least in CTR, AdWords campaign and now I'm looking at starting an overture account.

Does Overture have anything similar to AdWords exact match or does your search term , blue widgets, show for anything close ie. blue fuzzy widgets, widgets of australia, blue moon, etc?

It used to be that they would *only* show for exact matches, but thansk to their match driver, they now (if they don't have listings for a keyword phrase) match your 'blue widgets' search to 'blue widgets for free online' even though you are selling blue widgets and not giving them away for free.

This can be bad or good, depending on what you are targetting...so the answer is, yes, it is exact match only, but not all the time. :)

I'd first like to say I'm not a fan of matchdriver. But to overture's credit, it is more sophisticated than what most people think.

The basic applications of matchdriver are mispelling & single/plural combos. When matchdriver actually adds new word combos it pulls this data from your title & description.

If your bidding on "blue widgets" you should never be listed under "free blue widgets" unless you use the word "free" in your title or description. They key is to be very careful about what words you use when describing your site. Don't ever include things like "free shipping" or "toll free number".

Ah, so for the low hanging fruit, it's best to tread very, very cautiously then...given that they'll mix & match from the title / description, that means you could *potentially* be getting charged for lots of clicks that are basically irrelevant...not so good.

With that in mind, perhaps you stick with the higher priced keywords and maybe the match driver won't have a potentially negative impact on your advertising budget? :)

Thanks.

Seth : as soon as I hit enter on this post I'm rushing over to the panel to take "free shipping" out- thanks for the heads up.

Jeremy : unfortunaltely I have yet to be able to find one of those hidden 0.05 gems so everything I am looking at has enough competition to push the price up.

By the way how long does it take once you make a change to a listing before it populates to the partners.

The change is instantaneous..... once the editors approve the change, which is not instantaneous.

There is still a chunk of cheap inventory out there, and even mispellings can be bought still.

Good advice from Seth though.
