I've contacted customer sefvice asking for a refun of the $50. They are refusing saying I agreed to "non-refundable deposit." I respond that they agreed to provide me with some type of service.
Lycos is a huge portal with a lot of users and access to over 40 world markets. Give it some time for the users getting used to those new ad units when they search around and I bet your clicks will go up. The traffic is surely there (see below metrics)
My only beef is that they let Findwhat development the cpc system for them.
Here are Lycos metrics
Over 7 billion page views per month
Nearly 5 million access subscribers
61 million registered users
91 million unique monthly visitors
Large audience in 40 markets around the world
Strong global brands
Rich content portfolio
Industry-leading growth
New online ad formats almost universally have achieved their highest success upon introduction. As Lycos users get more used to these tiles click-thrus will almost assuredly go DOWN.
Lycos may work to adjust them by changing colors, fonts, sizes, etc. which could improve effectiveness, but then it would really be a different ad format.
What I see as the major problem is Lycos launching this product without adequate testing. They have plenty of usability specialists and data analysts on staff - where was the beta-testing?
When I communicate with them it is obvious that click-thrus are way underperforming their expectations. However, they shouldn't have had expectations, they should have know what the average click rates were going to be by doing proper pre-launch testing.
If or when these select clients have been reviewed then the advertiser should be able to provide the user with all of the information for a good experience on the site. If every ppc advertiser had a great site to go to I would click on those listings being the common user if I, for the majority of the time found what I was looking for through those links.
Point being if Lycos accepts crap cpc advertisers that use starfield backgrounds on their site and no security features or experience for the user then the clicks will fall. On the other hand if well developed, secure, and user friendly sites are accepted alone then ctr should in turn go up. I guess we will see how the almightly $ plays a roll in this.
