one thing sure leads to another. as i venture farther into scripting language i hear more and more about xml. i'm really curious. We want to implement a xml feed for shipping on a ecommerce site i own for accuracy. i would love some kinda of direction for sure. A book to read? I site with relevent information. From waht i understand most transfer feed information is done through this language. and i'm very curious about this. any pointers?

a search for "XML Introduction" will find you a whole pile of sites offering introductory lessons in XML.

XML itself isn't too complicated. It can be explained in a half-page brochure.
Using XML effectively... one could fill a library

Since you're planning to consume an XML feed, you should also read a little about "REST" (REpresentational State Transfer), as in "REST Web Services" particularly in ColdFusion.
