Default Location for Sitemap File

What is the default location for a sitemap?

Is it sitemap.xml or sitemap.gz?

Which location do search engines look automatically, if any?

If it is sitemap.gz, am I just able to rename my file from .xml to .gz and it would work just fine, or would I need to do something to it?
