Is for a single-page website in LA worth it?

Hey Everybody,

I just got quoted $149 for a one-paged website in Los Angeles. Is this a fair price?

I found this company when I searched for web design near me and they seemed to provide the cheapest price. I have little understanding when it comes to this manner, so I am not sure if this is a good deal, or a red flag, or pretty standard.

A few questions:

Is $149 a reasonable price for a single paged website?
Where is the best place to host this website after completion?
Any advice from people who have been through this or are web designers is appreciated.

Hello robertmeyer and welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com]

Since your question was posted under the topic of WordPress, I expect that your one page website is a WordPress site. You would need to have hosting before you can install WP on the domain. We do not discuss hosting in any of our forums, it leads to a lot of spam.

For aWP site you can install it yourself if you look for a host with one of the installers available. You can find free themes with instructions at WP.org: [wordpress.org...]

If you already have your domain, all you need is some time for reading and you can put up a "one page" site in just a few hours. Being WP, it will have more than one page because WP holds the content and serves it in various formats.

If you do not need WP, you can build a one page website, but any site has more than one 'page' because you may want a robots.txt file and an .htaccess file to ensure that people can use the site and you can control your URL (and traffic). At w3schools they offer how-to pages for all your start-up needs and it is free.

That welcome link above offers tips on using the forums' features and settings.

I believe it was a WordPress website. I was recommended to host with (a host) and purchase domains. Is this a good option?

You need to own a domain in order to have a website of any kind. Again, we do not discuss hosting in any of our forums, it leads to a lot of spam. Only you can decide whether any given host meets your needs, assuming you have a list of what you'll need.

A single page that features as a home page can be a work of art in many ways.

The research and negotiations with the client, including getting paid will be at least a couple of hours. The graphics could be a couple of hours, more if a logo needs to be created. The copy needs to be written and then everything including layout needs to be presented, reviewed and approved. I have never seen a first draft approved, which means how many edits and rewrites?

Shared hosting and Domain registry can be pretty cheap (<$100/yr). Bear in mind you get what you pay for. Notepad++ and a primer on HTML will give you the tools to craft the one page (or you can crib a page from the web and modify it to your specs).

If you have an eye for photos or art, add that for visual appeal.

BUT, before you even start, make sure you have a product/presentation that is unique enough to even show up on the WWW.

MEANWHILE! If this is a brochure site for a business, then consider it a "Yellow Pages" advertisement and get that address and phone number out there!
