I have a shared lamp server with plesk that I can use to create mySQL databases, but it has no tools to manage the database - cant even set username/pass or view the tables - is this normal ?

What tools should i download for managing the mysql

Thanks

Most shared hosts use phpmyadmin [phpmyadmin.net] which is simple to use. Take a peek.

Thanks, its not installed but I have heard of this & I'm sure it needs to be. Is it installable in a web root over ftp and can be set up to connect to mySQL databases in the same site ?

What version of Plesk? Do you mean shared as in shared hosting?

I'd check with the host first, it may just not be activated for your domain. You shouldn't have to do any FTP'ing to activate myPHPAdmin with Plesk. If your hosting plan supports mySQL, you should be able to go to (for dedi, Domains -> ) Select domain -> Databases -> target database, and you should see a link to "DB WebAdmin." This is phpMyAdmin.

If you're not seeing this, it means it's not activated. On a dedi/VPS, you can activate this yourself, if it's shared, contact your host before installing one.

Its plesk 8.3.0, its not a ded or vps its just a really basic shared host.

In tools, its just got create and delete databases - nothing else to manage the dbs.

Ill contact the host tomorrow to see what the score is with dbadmin tools, in the meantime I have just signed up for another host with Linux & CPanel that has been reccomended.

Admittedly I've only worked with the dedi version, but just to verify, what happens when you create a database, then click the link of the existing database? The DB WebAdmin link only appears on the next screen.

Generally Plesk can be a confusing tool, but it makes sense in this context. If you don't have a database to edit, there's no use for phpMyAdmin.

When you ccreate a database it just return you to the plesk desktiop with teh option to add another or delete. The only way to view the database is to click on delete, you then get a list of the mySQL databases and can delete them. No other options!
