Thanks to an awesome member here I've recently fixed up my DNS settings, but there's one I can't get my head around. From my DNS report:
mail.example.com claims to be host ip-123-456-78-900.ip.my-host.net [but that host is at 123-456-78-900 (may be cached), not 123.456.78.999]
The IP ending in "900" is actually the default shared IP for the server. The one ending in "999" is a dedicated ip (the domain has a cert.)
All of my DNS settings are pointing to the dedicated IP, including mail.example.com. I cannot for the life of my figure out why I'm getting this message in the report. It may be cached, but it's hung for two days now, something is hosed up. Any ideas?
I can SSH an edit files directly if I have to. Outline of my current DNS settings in Plesk (anony-mized, "999" represents the dedicated IP):
host - record type - value
123.456.78.999 / 24 - PTR - example.com.
ftp.example.com. - CNAME - example.com.
mail.example.com. - A - 123.456.78.999
ns1.example.com. - A - 123.456.78.999
ns2.example.com. - A - 123.456.78.999
webmail.example.com. - A - 123.456.78.999
www.example.com. - CNAME - example.com.
example.com. - NS - ns1.secondary-ns-server.com.
example.com. - NS - ns1.example.com.
example.com. - A - 123.456.78.999
example.com. - MX (10) - mail.example.com.
example.com. - TXT - v=spf1 a mx include:my-host.net ~all
(note: the include line is required by my host, the SPF is working fine)
mail.example.com claims to be host ip-123-456-78-900.ip.my-host.net [but that host is at 123-456-78-900 (may be cached), not 123.456.78.999]
I think this might not be directly related to DNS, but reflect an incorrect hostname given in the HELO/EHLO greeting banner of your mail server.
If you use telnet or similar to open a connection to mail.example.com on port 25, the response should be
[status] mail.example.com (check that this isn't any other host).
