or how can I update my site more efficiently

Have a live site & a private beta site.

I regularly update the live site by ftp'ing / or copy & pasting the relevant code across in dreamweaver.

Obviously this is not an ideal solution - sometimes I forget a file, sometimes dreamweaver / my OS caches an old file and overwrites the new one with it.

My site(s) are now very popular and I cannot afford to do it this way anymore, I need a rock solid solution.

Can anyone advise?

The question should be do you need source control in general? It does sound like you do, or at least wish to have it to make sure you don't lose your work. There are many options out there subversion is not the only game in town. If you are running Dreamweaver 8 or greater it has source control options I believe, which allow it to work with selected 3 party software. I am not sure if this includes SVN or only Source Safe Compatible applications. I use SourceGear Fortress software personally for source control, it may work with Dreamweaver but never checked if it does or not.
