Webmasterworld seems to have gone for the no advertising route,

What do you prefer? Donate or sign up for X

I personally prefer the latter especially as I cannot use paypal (an never will) from Thailand. I prefer a company structure that says ok for so much you get this and for X you get this etc

For me Webmaster World has become a very valuable tool, I would gladly pay to use these forums :)

What I have learnt here in the past few months has benifitted my online business immensely.

Donation no, yearly subscription yes :)

If there is any surplus cash maybe we could have a nice glossy magazine every few months, with articles and content written by members for members?

Just my thoughts :)

why below my name reads “new user”? how can i become a member? i suppose i have to donate or subscribe. i have seen that everyone posting here is a kind of member: there are junior members, full members, preferred members, senior members, etc.

i have learned many things in the few days i’ve been around here, i’d like to be a member of this great community! :) what should i do to be a member, donate or subscribe or what else?

>> how can i become a member?

Just keep up the quality posts. That field is controlled by your recorded post numbers. No level of donation will increment that title, just your contribution to the forum. I think "junior member" kicks in at 20 posts, which most people reach really quickly, hence you don't see the "New user" title often

There is no membership per se here, the status below your nick is just a reflection of how many posts you have under your belt (and posts in Local are not included in this tally). More info on this here [webmasterworld.com]. Donations do not affect your status at all.

There is a private forum for people who donate here and the subject of donation versus subscription has been discussed here before. Regardless of how you look at it, any payment is worth every last dollar that you put in - as well as helping in some way with the maintanance costs.

donating and subscribing to the cause is both a rightful and worthwhile activity, though it won't change your membership status which is based on the amount of posts that you have made.

level one posts = 0+ = New User
level two posts = 20+ = Junior Member
level three posts = 80+ = Full Member
level four posts = 200+ = Preferred Member
level five posts = 400+ = Senior Member
level six posts = 800+ = Senior Member
level seven posts = 10000+ = rcjordan

Question:

Is that donation button a PayPal graphic?

Ive seen the same one on a few sites.

Well, not wanting to go against the grain but I prefer donate. (And I haven't yet.) Or maybe a two tier charges for people who make their living from this and people who do this as a hobby. I am in the latter category.

Just my two cents,
Shane

level seven posts = 10000+ = rcjordan

What happens to Rcjordan if some exceeds 10000 posts?

If you count all the other posts, that are not accumulated in the post count, hence Foo, and other places, RC, as well as Brett, are way beyond 10k+; it ain't crashed yet.

Subscription is good however none of my sites would do well of subscription. Nor have I put donations. I just link to some of my other sites stores and hope people will go for it. Which they really dont ;P time to rethink.... :D

Some interesting comments and it seems like the majority is for subscriptio. I also prefer that route and find it quite annoying that I cannot donate or sunscribe just because of the country I am in.

There's a mailing address listed here: About WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com]. I think that a cheque in US funds would be accepted. Maybe send Brett [webmasterworld.com] a sticky to find out?

Cheques are not an option when International too many problems (mail, charges etc). If it were set up as a company and accepted Amex etc then fine.
