I have a suggestion for Brett and the other mods regarding the perpetual problem of message volume. We were all new members once, and we all know that it is very exciting to come across the wonderful WebmasterWorld community for the first time. This excitement leads to a great burst of posting from some people - I noticed one person today who was listed as having joined *yesterday* and was already up to 32 posts. I remember someone a few months ago who hit 100 her first week.

We all remember how exciting this place is to find, but we also remember that most questions we asked as new members had already been discussed (repeatedly). (When does the Google update start?)

I suggest that new members be welcomed and invited to participate as they now are, but that everyone have a two-post-per-day limit for, say, a week after they first join, and then a five post limit for another week. After two weeks, many new members will find all their questions answered just by reading, and the overall message volume will improve as will the overal signal to noise ratio.

Just my 2 cents.

Excellent idea. I'm not sure about the specifics, but the general principle is a fine idea. I'll put it near the top of things yet to do on the software. Thanks rj.

I'd suggest a mod override, though - What about a person with a unique and serious problem? It would be very discouraging to be limited to two posts per day in a case like that.

Hmmm... Perhaps what should be limited is the ability to start more than two threads per day.

Two posts?

Suppose a new user asks a question that results in more than one question back. They'd be out of luck, since if they answered a single question from another user they'd have used up their second post.

Any further answers from the new user would have to wait untill the next day.

And just how long would this limit last?

I've been here over a year.

I'd still be limited to 2 posts a day?

Oh I see I'm a junior member, maybe I still have one post left for today :)

Two threads sounds less unreasonable.

Wow ken_b, I thought my post count/time onboard was low. :)

I'm not to keen on limitations. Some folks that arrive here are goldmines of useful posts/content/comment --- Why risk alienating them?

Maybe I'm just a prickly kinda guy ;) but I'd be a bit peeved to find my account limited on arrival...

I'd have to say thumbs down to that one... a lot of new members here are very experienced with internet use and online communities, and are perfectly capable of making more than two valuable posts a day. I think we would risk alienating or insulting a lot of our more experienced and potentially most valuable new members by subjecting them to that kind of limitation.

I think its a very small minority who abuse the "unlimited" posts facility here.

The moderators do an excellent job at guiding them right, as do many of the members, who are always kind and welcoming to new members.

Since I have been a member I think on only 2 occasions have I seen blatant abuse by new members, deliberately out to discredit the community and the board.

I say leave things as they are, but possibly have a way to alert modertaors to bad behaviour, however in most cases the moderators pick this up super quick and the damage is limited.

just my 2 pence worth

perhaps alow them to reply as often as they like... but only be alowed to start 2 new threads.. that way if they are knowlegable they will be able to assist other members.

as do many of the members

And isn't that just what makes this such a nice place? It's amazing how people take a pride in this place regardless of ther 'status' -- Everyone is valued here and it's a nice feeling to be part of it...
