The update is about to begin!

Lets remember what types of posts are helpful, and which ones are not.

Since webmaster world is always growing and there are many new members during any given update maybe we can list ideas of what types of posts can help the veterans figure out how the algo has changed once the dance begins.

On the same note we can list our opinions on what types of posts are mostly fodder.

My Suggestion:

Let's start two threads once the dance begins.

1.Vent your frustrations here if your SERPs are dropping.

2.Pat yourself on the back here if your SERPs are up.

I think this would give everybody a place to tell others who understand what they might be feeling as well as moving most of the non analytical posts from the more technical threads.

How do you know the updates about to begin? This would mean i was only about 8 hours off on my google odds guess! Guessed Oct 29th at some time... But back to the question, how do u know?

Interesting idea. 3 update threads. One for those jumping in joy. And another for those crying in their beer. The last for those indifferent and just analyzing things. ;)

He doesn't know, other than the update is now definitely overdue. Although this could be like March when the update happened April 6.

As far as knowing when the update will begin... I don't. It could go another month and I would still probably swear that it could start any minute:)

I say go for three threads. One for the "joy" one for the "rants" and one for the "genuine info" then after the hype is over the joy and rant threads can get cut leaving only the usefull info for the site search.

Since we can't post real search phrases let's avoid posts that go like this...

"I can't believe this garbage! And if thats not enough the sites are full of tiny text, hidden text, one pixels GIFs, pop-ups, javascript rollover menus, and words positioned off-screen with CSS! I completely concur.

It would be great to just focus update threads to 3 or 4, but recently, you can have 15-20 threads going at one time, must be a logistics nightmare for the mods.

I think 3 threads would work perfectly.
"Satisfied"
"Unsatisfied"
"Just trying to figure things out" (non-opinionated)

This might eliminate the "emotionally" driven posts that clog up the flow of actual information for folks who are just trying to sort out what's going on.

Personally, I think two threads would do the job, and don't really see the reason to separate "joy" from "rants" -- and I don't think it'll work. Once someone says what they did and what the results are, good or bad, the next person who did something similar but with opposite results is going to follow that "rant" with their own "joy," or vice versa.

Put all of the commentary about ones' own update-related results in one thread, and the "genuine info" and analysis about the update in another.

Don't forget a separate thread for "It's begun", "I can't see it here yet", "No, it's really happening", etc.

Yes, 1 thread for rants and joys would work. And another thread for technical analysis. Perhaps a few flames to the early ranters and joy posters could get it straight.

I think the outlook for organized posting looks bleak judging from the response to this thread (not to insult the people who posted!) If we don't have any agreement from a sizable group of members, or some skillful moderating it will be another free-for-all.

The slow response is probably because the thread got moved from Google News to this forum. Sometimes I think people only read the Google news, especially right now!
