Wow. domain name snagged.

I've been watching this domain name for over a year.

Domain Name: WEBMASTERWORLD.COM

It was owned by none other than NetworkSolutions themselves. The idiots let it lapse and I caught it within 10mins after midnight eastern time when it lapsed!

Anywho...just had to tell someone who understood the implications...

Coming in February 2000 - let the hype begin.

How are you watching the domain name? Is there an automated process that will let you know when a domain name becomes available? I've been keeping an eye on 1 or 2.

Watch the whois when the record was last updated. Then just add one or two years to that date and check it when it is due for renewal.

Way to go Brett.Nicely done.If they have put a lot of money into this domain I think you could make a nice profit when you sell it back to them.Have you been hearing about this new domain registration program.I have received emails saying you can now get domains up to 65 characters in length. I cant remember the name offhand but if you are interested I can dig it up.It was only about a week ago I received it.Maybe I should keep my eye on some of the big name domains and see if they screw up too.Just imagine the traffic you get if you managed to snag one of the mega domains.Hope you make a bundle!!

Which date is the one to watch? One of the domains I have my eye on has teh following info:

Record last updated on 15-Jun-1997.
Record created on 15-Jun-1997.
Database last updated on 12-Mar-2000 10:19:47 EST.

By my calculation this domain should be available unless they locked in for 10 years which I doubt they did cuz I don't believe the option was available in 1997.

Am I right or wrong here?

What are the legal implications of snagging domains. Will this just work for unused domains? I'm not planning on high-jacking any web sites but I would like to know if it's possible.

Oilman: use the record created date to go from. It usually is the date the domain was registered. The record last updated is when the domain has changed nameservers or host. The database record is when networksolutions have updated their db. Bear in mind that even though a name may lapse there is a waiting period of at least 30 days before anyone other than the original owner can register it.

Something:I would guess that snagging a domain would have the same implications as registering a new one legaly; although snagging microsoft or yahoo would give you 15 seconds of fame keeping it would be another matter!

I've been using www.domaingames.com to find dropped domains but it seems to be old data, i would like to know of similar sites out there if there are any.

John: Try unclaimeddomains.com - they're not perfect but pretty good. The name's a bit misleading: it's really all about released and expired domains these day.

The question is what happens after the expiration date. If the whois record says that the creation date of the record was 3/21/98, then the registration expires at midnight EST on 3/21/00, right? And then what? The record remains untouchable for a certain grace period? And if it is not renewed by the owner, then what? Does it get erased, making the domain essentially revert to the available pool? Is there a way to know exactly what the grace period is? Also, I noticed the whois database seems to be updated once a day, at about 13:00 EST. In that case, if the record is not updated by the owner, will it become available after that time or at midnight on the expiration of the grace period?
