character entities in posts?

We were having a discussion about character entities and I noticed that on posts "&" are automatically converted to "&" thus preventing something in the form of "â" from displaying "â". Is there anyway around that?

It looks like a simple issue, but it's a very complex. It's probably the most complex thing about the software and my current major task behind the scenes. The issues involved are: Unicode, alternative languages, alternative character sets, xml, html, escaped code, interpreted code syntax highlighting, formated pure text, and unformatted pure text.

As soon as the alternative interface language code is finished, I'll move on to input languages, character sets, and encodings.

hehe - I do lots of programming too, so I know how "simple" things can be very complex. Its not a pressing issue by any means :)

One other unrelated small suggestion. When a user has unread new mail could a more obvious flag be added (perhaps just putting the little red dot used elsewhere).

By the way, you've really done a great job with the software for this place.
