Under the "System preferences" there is an option called "Max threads on forum list?" which is a drop-down list - unfortunately when I just visited the preferences it was empty/blank.
I just changed some settings then saved - I found out that it being blank is a bad thing because it seems to stop you viewing *anything* on the forums...
