Incongruence in no. of messages per thread

This thread [webmasterworld.com] has "2" under "MSGs" in the Recent Posts [webmasterworld.com] list. At time of writing, it has 3 posts, including the OP.

I've noticed this before but always thought I was just misremembering how posts were counted. But clearly there's a discrepancy.

What gives?

I can't say for sure but it seems related to the difference in indexing since the host move last spring. I am seeing posts a day after they were posted, it has been mentioned on to-do topics.

An example - the excellent Google publishes guide to Search ranking systems article you posted yesterday (TY!) was also posted as "New: A guide to Google Search ranking systems" by engine yesterday but I did not see it until now: [webmasterworld.com...]

Methinks it's a feature to make us all dig into each and every forum. ;)

Joking apart, it's certainly on the feature (bug) list, and thanks for reporting it.

In the scheme of things this falls pretty close to "huh?"

Since the first message is pinned at the top it kind of makes sense the "message count" starts AFTER that initial message. :)

I suspect there are other bugs (features) that need to be chased before this one!

I was always struck by that difference between WebmasterWorld and other message-board systems such as php/bb. This site counts all messages in a thread, including the first. Most sites count only the number of replies.
