Hello. New member here.

How can I set things so I get emails when people respond to my threads or PM me?

If you find out, please let me know. I haven't got email notifications in ages (My WebmasterWorld: StickyMail prefs). For a while, mysteriously, I did get notification when the sender was an administrator, but now even those are gone. And it's no longer because my email host eats them.

So how do I know when someone replies to my thread? :-(

Also, isn't there an option when I come to this site to display "Subscribed Threads"?

Check the box says:
Email notification of new replies?
at the bottom next to the Submit button.

Note: to display these features, you cannot be blocking JavaScript.

Actually, that's not true. You have to be in PREVIEW if you are blocking js (as I routinely do) to tick the notify me of replies. What we might have is a lack of features on the forum page.

At the bottom of threads, you can click "Follow Thread". Unfortunately since I have no threads I follow and just use "Recent Posts" to see what's new, I can't tell you if you get a notification unless you have turned on notification when you post a comment. You may just find them under the "My Webmaster World" Menu at the top.

Is there an option when I visit the site to see all of my threads?

@SenecaFalls - Yes, if using a Desktop browser, on the right-hand side of the page you'll see:
My Threads

Okay thanks!

BTW, how do I quote someone?

You can either use quote tags like this:
[quote]stuff here[/quote]
or use the editor when you post.

Most of this stuff you can discover just by experimenting. These things are pretty much standard for many forums.

Actually a lot of the features I am used to seeing on forum websites are diffeent here.

Normally there is a button to "quote" the last person. I don't see that or an editor. Sorry, I'm trying!

I don't see... an editor.
When you are in Post mode, click Preview. You'll see the editor.

Good luck :)

When you are in Post mode, click Preview. You'll see the editor.

Good luck happy!

I figured out "Post Reply" is sorta like "Advanced Mode" on most other forums.

But it still doesn't let you click a button and quote the person.

I do see if you highlight the post you want to quote and then hit that button and then click on quote and then paste in what you copied you can quote someone, but that is way too many steps when most websites let you do all of that in one click!

You guys should consider fixing that... ;-)

Actually a lot of the features I am used to seeing on forum websites are different here.
This forum dates back to when most now-well-known forums software was just a gleam in its developers' eye, so everything was coded from the ground up . . . and even today nobody hereabouts would dream of swiping ideas from other forums. Editorial comment suppressed.

No, there is no way to select text, click Quote, and have it come through as
“soandso said:
blahblah
* if that's what you are used to. You can either put in the [ quote ] tags manually, or click from Preview. There's no mechanism for saying whom you're quoting. (But then, even in forums that have this feature, it's just a markup convenience. There's no underlying link between the quotation and the original, and hence nothing to stop anyone from putting words into anyone else's mouth.)

:: idly wondering who, if anyone, is currently in charge of typo fixes on the Post Code Help [webmasterworld.com] page ::

* Looking at you, php/bb3

I actually prefer the default of no notifications to my email as I can remember what I want to check, have no desire for my email inbound to be littered, and otherwise take charge of my interests ... myself.

In that regard WW is lean mean a posting machine ... and more bang for the buck (most of us leech for free) than any other forum out there.

Fun thing is this site is functional with JS disabled, ad blockers in place, and NoScript for the FF crowd. That is something to take to the bank. IOW, it simply works.
