I've just heard the sad news that incredibill, [webmasterworld.com] Bill Atchison, has passed away.

Bill has had a number of health issues for quite a while, and, despite that, he was always chirpy and positive.
Over the years Bill and I became great friends, and we'd laugh and joke about so many wacky subjects. Despite the challenges he faced, he always kept on being positive.

Bill did a great deal of work for the WebmasterWorld community over the years, and, i'm certain that many of you that knew him will be very sad to hear of his passing.

RIP Bill Atchison

Sorry to learn of his passing, he was a unique voice here on WebmasterWorld. Never knew of his health issues -- though high blood pressure would not have surprised me, things often got quite heated in his posts! -- but then again what do we really know about one another? My condolences.

To me Bill is synonymous with bots especially how best to identify, understand, and mitigate their presence. That his lessons were blunt and his critiques caustic buried the lesson points deep. If I were to list the WebmasterWorld members who have had the greatest impact on my sites' operation Bill the bot killer would likely be number one.

Thank you, Bill, for giving of your time. You may be dead but are not gone for as I play whack a bot I still hear your whispers. I wonder if the expletives or the raised mug will be the last to fade?

Oh my. :(.

I went outside to my garden this morning to pick some cucumbers and greens for the breakfast salad. With that done I sat down, whipped out my Blackberry to read some WebmasterWorld as I always do. And BOOM......

Bill first reached out to me on May 15 of 2008. It was a matter of "SV1" user agent is coming from "Trend Micro" AV & AVG thread. One of those supper long threads at [webmasterworld.com...] .

I learned a lot from him over the years. In fact, the last 10 years of my career as a developer is based on a LOT that I learned from him.

So I exhaled with tears :(.

Thank You Bill. RIP.

I swing by here on a ~weekly basis to read. I occasionally post. . . but I spent enough time on these forums in the last 14 years to now be aware of the gaping hole that's in the community. RIP.

Can't believe it, I'm far and never had the chance to meet him but Bill just as other forum members made their nickname a true persona in the forum. Anything he posted was worth reading. RIP Bill.

Sad news Bill certainly was an incredible guy. I will miss him and his sometimes non-PC humor. A super-smart mind that helped to formulate many best practices, RIP Bill.

When Bill took umbridge with a particular aspect of our bot, we took her s opinion SO seriously, I flew to the other side of of the world, to meet him in a pub and discuss it face to face.

After that we met at as many conferences as we could, although he has not been well enough to get to many these last few years. Rest In Peace, Bill.

Coming back from a week of holiday, I had heard the sad news quite early on the trip and tried not to think about it. But now is the time to speak up and send my condolences to his friends and his family. Bill is my 3rd WebmasterWorld and Pubcon friend, who has left us. The years here and all the conferences we enjoyed together are key memories for me. He will be missed and we had a few very hard laughs together in New Orleans, I will never forget. Thanks, Bill!

As soon as I saw the post subject, I thought oh no, not another one.

And then, just as I was reading lucy24's post and tearing up for some reason, Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust" sprang into my mind. Given Bill's avowed crusade against the bots, it seems appropriate.

Like many here, I didn't get to meet Bill personally, but the help and guidance he freely gave, was always appreciated. His legacy lives on now in people who learned from him over the years.

Vale Incredibill.
