We had a drive by vote spammer that posted over 2K votes as a new member and this vote spam will soon be reversed.which will result in a sharp decline of votes for some members when this adjustment is made. The vote reversal

Furthermore, we will be implementing tools such as flood control to stop thinkgs like this from happening again in the future.

Ouur apologies to anyone that has a sudden perceived drop in popularity, but these votes were never real in the first place.

Thanks in advance for your understanding in this matter.

Would it not solve any such problems if "voting" was implemented as it was in the beta phase..only seniors vote..but..they can vote for anyone..anyone who gets to "senior" ( needs 1000 posts ATM ) is highly unlikely to be a spammer..and is also more likely to know what constitutes a "useful" post for others and for WebmasterWorld..than someone who has just arrived, or is a single issue poster, maybe only "liking" those who agree with their point of view on that particular subject..

Likewise links..( we talked about before, I think that at the time you said that new members under a certain post count could not post links, but there are still posters with less than 100 posts posting links..some post links , usually to their own sites on their very first post ) ..you'd cut the number of spammers down to negligible if it required a 100 posts before being able to post a working link..

Ah, so that's why my vote count had that inexplicable overnight jump a while back...

Wouldn't stop them from posting non-working links though ... and past experience suggests that most new members never even look at their posts after clicking Submit, or there wouldn't be so many unintended smileys and mangled links (looking at you, Apache subforum).

Don't worry about new members, the flood control will allow participation without abuse.

We'd prefer new members to have as much access as possible without restricting too much but we also have tools that throttle them already thanks to the spammers, and throttleing votes will just be another restriction :)

I don't quite understand the whole vote thing. I got some votes for one particuler thread i participated in and now those votes are following me around, giving the impression that i am some kind of expert. Shouldn't a vote in a thread stay in that thread so as not to mislead?

My vote count hasn't changed.... but then again, I wondered where the heck they came from in the first place! Will add my voice to what the heck purpose is this voting thing?

And if we are to have votes, where's the NEGATIVE vote function? Some posts certainly beg for a down vote.

Exactly. What is the point of attaching "25 votes" to your name? The newly arrived visitor has no way of knowing whether you said 25 things that made one person say "yeah, that kinda makes sense," or a single thing that 25 people thought was surpassingly brilliant. And, in the "25 things" scenario, no way of knowing whether it was one person who really likes the way you think*, or 25 different random people. And then there's the problem that post count goes back forever, while vote count only goes back to the week before last-- give or take, I forget-- so you can't even look at vote:post proportions.

* I don't think my cats have figured out how to vote. The rats, maybe.

The vote counts haven't had the inflated spam votes cleansed yet. But it's coming.

The purpose of this thread is to give a heads up to those who assumed their hundred+ posts were actual and so they'll know ahead of time that their vote counts had been inflated, so they won't be alarmed when their votes go down. :P

When did this vote spammer hit? The count for tangor has built one to three a day since voting started, and why would a spammer elevate MY stuff? Not that I care as I don't vote for any posts.

Like others I 'seem to have missed the memo' as to the care and feeding of votes

AND

more specifically how to see what event(s) caused the vote(s).
