I am a webmaster in NYC. I have been in this line of work for about 5 years. I took a CIW course that was very basic, a soup-to-nuts that included javascript, HMTL, CSS, security, DNS, etc.
I came to this line of work as a natural growth of my career. Started as a writer and editor and became interested in technology. My first webmaster-ly job was with a non-profit where I negotiated a new contract with a new design firm and ran the site, as well as contributed all of the content. I have continued to grow in this direction, working mostly at small companies where I am a one-woman web department, typically handling back and front end duties.
I am currently the webmaster for a small college in NYC (<snip>). Our site is built on a proprietary platform (OpenText/RedDot) and I will soon attend training for RedDot (I can do most of the work, but development in RedDot is very specific and I do need more training in this area).
I am currently very interested in SEO and SEM and am working on improving the organic search results of the college's site. I am also very interested in social networking and social media. I do code but spend most of my time on big picture campaigns so would definitely like to (someday) carve out the time to work on more coding projects.
Looks like a great resource here.
Cheers from NYC.
Lola
