WW Pages not fully loading?

Could just be me, but . . .

Recently the pages here seem to not complete the loading process. That is, in FF when I visit this site, the "loading" icons on my tabs keeps on spinning and spinning, never full finishing the load.

Pages and content are all loading fine. It's similar to the same problem you get with Flash when the Flash is referencing a non-existent object and doesn't have error handling to manage it: it's as if the page is never done.

Right now, typing this, two minutes or so . . . the loading icon is still spinning.

Seems like the event correlates with the appearance of the PubCon banner (which I'd hoped never to see, banners here. :-) )

I thought it was just me so left it alone for a few days, been comparing other sites, even heavy ones, and no problems there. It's just this site.

The only delays I've experienced at WW have been during the reply process... sometimes it takes several to many minutes to complete. Made the mistake two or three times thinking it had not been accepted and sent it again, resulting it duplicate entries. As for the banner, I suspect it will disappear and all returns to normal after the event. At least I hope so!

Thanks; but it's not a delay. Pages load fine. They just . . . . never stop loading. :-)

However your mention of the post issue is another thing, but it's probably me, maybe not; maybe it's related. The http refresh after posting, the one that returns to the thread, seems broken, but only sometimes. I can click the link to the thread and it goes right in. Usually there's no time to click the link.

This loads just fine, boom, it's done. So it's not a server issue, but I noticed the forum has Analytics on the pages, the RSS feed URL does not. It's probably that.

I run NoScript in FF so the refresh never works for me (have to manually ALLOW it). As for GA... that's already forbidden in my setup so I never see that and can't speak to your observation in that regard.

Problem persists, and is getting annoying in the same way animations are annoying (The loading icons on my tabs are spinning and spinning.) Maybe it's because the Analytics is immediately after the <body> instead of before the end of the body? Don't know.

Out of curiosity visited a few other sites with Analytics, no problems there.

Have you tried another browser or, if available, another type of network connection? maybe it's loading something from another server (like GA) and the routing is broken?

I've just allowed javascript for WW and GA with FF & XP SP2 but with DSL and it works just like it should. If you want to spend time on diagnosing it, it might be helpful to run a sniffer like wireshark to see what's actually going on, since Live HTTP Headers and the like don't show the request until it's completed iirc.

I noticed the same thing on 28th June. Firefox 3.0.11, no add ons. For me the WebmasterWorld logo would never load, and the loading bar at the bottom would often report it was waiting for Google Analytics.

Problem went away by itself the next day without any action on my behalf. I assumed it had been spotted and fixed.

I've noticed the same thing on some political sites I frequent on a daily basis. I suspect that at times it's the Google Analytics or some other HTTP call to 3rd party content.

It's not an issue at WebmasterWorld, but with some sites it's an ad server HTTP call that's causing the hanging, sometimes causing the page not to load at all.

Bottom line: too many HTTP calls to other sites are not a good thing. Fortunately, WebmasterWorld doesn't have that issue with multiple ad servers like some sites do.
