I run a number of forums. Some have a VIP type area for supporters.

Those members who support us, gain a little recognition with a badge or at least a title that indicates they're a supporter.

I was wondering why WebmasterWorld doesn't give any recognition to it's supporters?

I don't need recognition but it's one of those nice touches.

Whilst I hope you get an answer from someone who knows the answer, as something for you to think about in counterpoint to your own preference for a mark; these are some reasons why I'd not be keen on having such a mark:
  • Being a supporter is not limited to those who are knowledgeable or experienced and a mark may misleadingly add weight to their opinions
  • It could be mistaken as an indication that the poster is somehow posting on behalf of WebmasterWorld
  • It might well lead to snobbery and exclusiveness which would damage the welcoming nature of these forums
  • Supporters don't need a logo because to be honest they get far greater benefits with their supporters package

I agree in regards to the snobbery part. Though how it's implemented is key.

Here was the reason for my thread: Right now I'm not seeing any benefit at all for my premium membership. The attraction for me was, being able to post my url and gain feedback from fellow webmasters. Though it seems not many people bother looking in the review forum.

It would be nice, if supporters could at least post their urls in the main forum, where the majority of people read. That way we could gain maximum benefit.

So I began thinking how would the mods know who can and can't post their urls and the badge would be a simple solution. It could perhaps even be visible by mods/admin only.

Whilst I don't know the answer, I do like VVV's counter response. That about sums it up right there. ;)

In addition to what VVV said, here's my 2 cents worth.

To display who had paid for supporters forum would probably upset those who either:

    a) cannot afford to pay the annual fee, and
    b) put off people who contribute with their time and expertise.

You mention posting URL's. It is explained why URL's are not permitted. And, IMHO, I personally would be put off from helping people if I was not permitted to post my company URL every time I made a post just because I did not pay for the privilege. If you want my URL or more information about me or any other member, read their profile.

If you were to weigh a poster's contributions, who is more important: one who contributes to the forums giving their advice and, more importantly, their time, or someone who had some spare disposable income. If we assume that the average post takes a minimum of 5 minutes, then I have contributed over 5,500 minutes or nearly 92 hours of my time without asking for anything in return. Then there are those who have contribute thousands of posts totaling untold hours merely to help other people. And this does not take into consideration how much time a person might spend working on someone else's code in their spare time to come up with a solution.

And last, how about those who were members when WebmasterWorld was in its infancy and had faith that it would take off to the great community it has become.

In the end, what reward does a supporter get? Entrance into the supporters forum. What do I get? A lot of thank yous which works well for me.

When it comes down to it, the people who get respect from other members and mods are those who know their stuff and take the time to help others. I have witnessed countless conversations between mods/admins (both in forums and in person) that go like this ...

Mod: "Hey, what do you think about person X?"
Admin: "Oh, that guy seems really bright. He's always jumping in to help people in the Z forum."
Mod: "I thought so. I want to try and bump into him at the conference." (or: "Let's make him a moderator!")

I have yet to hear a similar conversation that includes the question, "Hey, is that guy a supporter?"

Yeah, but you should see what all the folks in supporters are saying about you :)

Yeah, but you should see what all the folks in supporters are saying about you

Is it something I should be concerned about?
