Comments: I wouldn't subscribe to use it as I do now (e.g. I wouldn't pay just to share info on a forum). I might subscribe if subscription included extras that I needed.

A "small subscription fee" is relative. Working in Malaysia and Thailand my weekly salary would pay for just over half a yahoo submission at $99. (is it still $99?) Our main problem is having to pay US costs on developing country budgets. I guess the East euro, Indian and other people here are also affected like this. The international flavour and non-us centric emphasis is great. But this may reduce the international particpiation from countries whose currencies are low. Of course with banners and text adv the discomfort is enqually shared though i guess we have slower transfer rates as well.
2. d) visit the same but use less.. if the banners slowed down loading i would stay on the same time but post and read less relatively due to time budgets!
3 d) no change
4.not sure based on affordability of above. Current format is fine.
I agree with trying to find a workable revenue model. This is the reality of the Web for the future and will become the norm for non-promotion/advertising sites with valuable content like WMW.

Comments:
It takes money to provide a service of lasting quality. Bandwidth does not grow on trees. (Food does grow on trees, but it helps to own the trees.) If we begrudge a person any compensation for their efforts, we should not be surprised when the bad karma comes full circle.
From a purely selfish POV, it takes money to make money. People who read this forum have a competitive advantage over Web designers and Internet marketers who do not. I'll take and keep any competitive advantage I can get, thankyouverymuch.
So, as I see it, the issue isn't whether Brett deserves compensation to cover his efforts and expenses (he does) or whether WebmasterWorld adds real dollars to our wallets (it does). The issue is how to best maintain the quality that we often take for granted... how to hammer out the most elegant solution that works for everybody.
My preferred choice is c)

P.S.
We could consider that some members give excellent contributions.
Maybe it could be considered a system that gives credits (points) on good, unique contribution.
Maybe these credits can be used as a bonus.

note: I would not subscribe in order to share what I know, and would hope that there would be something of value for my subscription, other than info/tools I could get elsewhere for free.
or all of the above

A tough one to answer without knowing all the details (ie price)but I can't imagine a change in format or content that would make me not subscribe.
Anyone else?

I'd be happy to support Webmaster World in becoming subscription based. This is one of two major research sites I use constantly to help make my work day easier.
On 4 if the value of the tools were worth the subscription rate.
