time duration for replying to topics

Reason for short open time for topics.

I'm curious about the seemingly short time that topics remain open for replies.

I attempted to reply to a topic that was dead-on to my question only to find out that it was closed. I think the date of the last post was only about 5 or 6 weeks ago.

I'm curious about the reasoning and also exactly how long the cut-off time span is.
