I just wondered if you think it may be useful to create an automated greeting message that would link to the TOS when we type, for example, w2wmrw (without the r) magically transforming into Welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com]

I seem to remember a whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiile back some discussion about who should do the greeting and what whould be said. How's this issue been solved?

You can add custom code to each page of WebmasterWorld. I call a javascript that has a function to append the welcome to my reply.

textarea[0].value = textarea[0].value+'[ b][ url=http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum19/2776.htm]Welcome to WebmasterWorld[/url],![ /b]';

You'll need to get rid of the extra spaces in the style codes, I had to include so that they wouldn't be translated in this post.

I don't think there's a rule on what to link people to when you go out of your way to welcome them. :)

I prefer HawkGirl's post over the TOS because the tone is more personal and it covers a wider range of "important to new people" topics.

Absolutely, HG's post was designed for that purpose.

Thanks for taking the time to welcome newbies.
