Forum Moderators: open
And the previous discussions on where we should go.
I think it turned out good. I'm excited about what the new hp can do for members. There will be some minor adjustments and changes along the way.
If anyone has any problems with the HTML on the homepage, please let me know asap. Outside of StickyMail, the entire board now validates as HTML 4.01 valid by the W3C validator.
The Old homepage is still there. It is linked on the right under "Forum Index" at the top of the forums list.

I like the colors, and the slight value variation. The eye normally moves to the left to start reading with Western languages, so the little darker shade of lavender on the right side section headings works perfectly to attract the eye. Nice balance.
I think it's a very effective arrangement on the featured posts with the layout and font sizes. There's a good balance in emphasis.
Is it my imagination, or is it much faster loading? I'm on a 56K.
Nice, very nice!
Must be a nervous time when you decide to publish such a major overhaul to such a much loved and well used site....
Best of luck with it!
Cool new frontpage, a big search engine hit, taken with the first coffee of the morning and I'll be buzzing all day. Highlighted posts made me click on a few forums I don't normally visit (more lost time at work I fear.)
But as an earlier post said i think the font size for the 'highlighted posts' is too big.
Also I was just wondering why you were using font tags when I see you are using a style sheet.
and in the right hand col the cells repeat the widths ie 75% when you only need to do it once in a cell and the others will inherit this size.
eeek, well you did say you wanted commens on the HTML ;)
It's Verdana, which is about 20% wider than the Arial used elsewhere on the page. Font size appears to be the same, i.e. 2. Sans-serifs don't mix well with each other, so appearence would improve with Arial/Helvetica everywhere. Times does not render well (jagged if not bold) and so should not be considered.
After I read a post, or reply to a post, and I click on the "HOME" link in the blue bar at the top, it takes me to the old home page.
Then I have to go to the url and erase the url until I just have [webmasterworld.com...] so it will take me to the new page.
It makes me crazy.
And I agree about the logo needing to be bigger...

I think I have that fixed grnidone.
I'll see if I can adjust the font size on the feature posts jimmykav.
The deal with the fonts is that I didn't used to use closing </font> font tags. That generally works, but I've found out it could mess up some browsers. So, closed all font tags, and made sure it validated. The descriptions on the forums index page are in Verdana. Don't like? Do like?
The right hand forum list is an idea. I fear the bandwidth hit. It would take 4k per page. Take that times 30-40k a day and you are into some serious bandwidth. I have a couple ideas I'm going to toy with though.
>Times does not render well (jagged if not bold) and so should not be considered.
rencke, you're right. I've particularly noticed that serf fonts are a problem with smaller font sizes. It's a shame, because they look so nice in certain colors on tinted backgrounds - they're just hard to read in smaller sizes.
I knew I liked you for a reason, BT ;)

What about just putting the right hand forum list *for that section* that you happened to be in.
So, let's say I am reading a post in the AV discussion. On the right side would be just the forums in the "Search Engine World" section.

PS And I do like new template..I realize I sounded negative before.
Is this the day from which the Highlighted Posts were drawn or the current date? If it is Current Date then I think it is pulling the date from the server and not from the members settings? It is a little confusing for those of us that are a day ahead...
All in all though a very usefull page. Although I do miss the "Red Balls" on the Fora List at the right.

As it is now, every forum that is displayed has to compare a date to a date in a cookie. That takes a long time and makes for a big cookie. The new system will instead be a single number that compares to the last read number on the whole system. Each forum will know what the highest serial number in it's forum is and compare from there. Much, much easier.
Woz, I am considering putting some new post markers on that list. It has been requested a few times. I'm not promising it, because it will require some industrial programming to get it right. And I'll look at the date issue too Woz.
