Why start new threads about the same thing?

Several times I've noticed that WebmasterWorld threads that contain really useful information have reached the point where they can no longer be added to. As a result, they just keep getting moved farther back in the list, where few people see them. Some are replaced with newer threads about the same thing, and people have to post links to the older threads, or repeat their answers.

What is the reasoning behind threads "timing out" after only a month or so?

The main reason is to stop people with pet threads from keeping those threads alive for months and months on end. This long after they are dead and buried. That covers 90% of threads that live longer than 30 days. The other 10% are threads like you mention.

That said, one of the life giving entities of any forum on the web today - is fresh timely topics.

Thanks.

Hope you don't mind explaining this again in a couple of months.
