Whew - What an ordeal.

Some day this week when the smoke finally clears, I will give a full accounting of what just occurred.

Moral of the story: we will have a real world workable disaster plan in place by the end of the month. It will specifcy that WebmasterWorld will not be offline for no more than 4 hrs maxium regardless of the circumstances.

Wow, I can't count the number of times I clicked the WW bookmark hoping over the past few days!

I had something similiar happen to my business in May.
It took two months to completely shake that ill feeling and regain my foward momentum.
Today I'm better prepared.
Hey, the goverment didn't handle Katrina to well, there is no reason we can't cut ourselves some slack.

I had to ask myself, why did I care that WW was down? WebmasterWorld is my reality check that my industry and my business isn't the only one in the world. The quality of thinking here is real yet rational, unlike what I too often on my screen when I open my emails.

I worked for a biz two years ago which had zero backup. All in one building. Finanicals, archives, servers. Everything. That was the second thing I changed when I went in. No story to report after that--never had to use the backups. But, as Brett will tell you, sheeeee....

I must admit that WebmasterWorld got me addicted really though not being a regural poster. Too bad WebmasterWorld missed the google PR update on time (I havent checked the threads yet!), I actually thought there wont be a google PR update as long as WebmasterWorld is down :-)

I would never have thought this b i g o f a hosting problem could happen to WW. Not WW! No way. I, and I think many of us thought the same and were very wrong.

Good to have you back Brett and a big thanks everyone behind the scenes managing this thing through to this great new home.

This new place is really fast from where I am and I'm not sure why, but I sure do like it so maybe this whole deal made 'The World' a bit stronger.

Good luck with the new home.

I know alot of people are concerned about the down time.

I am concerned about it for the members that have come to depend on WebmasterWorld for their daily education and dosage of webmaster life.

On the other hand, I have a strange feeling this is going to *cough* - help us in the long run. The new server is clearly head and heals above the old one. New processes, policies, and code are in place to address problems in the future.

Also, bestbbs lovers, notice the team listing on the about page :-)

Brett, thank you for all your hard work! This new server ROCK!

Like you said, it would have to be done sooner or later anyway.

Glad to have WW back Brett...

I suppose I am guilty of taking your service for granted, and the outage gave me pause to reflect upon how valuable a resource your forum and its knowledgeable members are. I may not always see eye-to-eye with everyone's views - but try to respect and learn from everyone's posts. I really look forward to "lurking" daily, and try to only make positive contributions to the fine community that you host.

Thank you for ALL your efforts Brett Tabke, and may you and WebmasterWorld have many more years of success! I for one will NOT take this forum for granted anymore.

Brett,

The about page still shows "This site is Hosted by WestHost.com." FYI

Never seen the side of WestHost where they house their own site go down - well until this time. All of our WestHost stuff stayed up and bullet proof with the exception of a few secure sites tied back to westhost.com.

Their explanation was a router that went down with no replacement readily available.

Glad you're back in one piece...

Nothing like an unexpected event outside of my own control to wake me up and allow me to think about how I spend my hours.

Every cloud has a silver lining.

I don't think I'll be one of those people who has "He wished he'd spent more time at the office" on his gravestone.

That said, Brett this has been an excellent example of how to pick yourself up and not just dust yourself off but put on a new suit of clothing (well that's how it looked from the outside anyway - cool calm and collected!).

The new server is clearly head and heals above the old one.

I'll second that. This is the first time I could really use the site in a month. We had guessed that it was something to do with Katrina. Now I guess there is a new route from WW to here and it's zipping along.

I tried to login and it said my username was not found in the database so i had to create a new account to write this.

Did this happen to anyone else?

Also, bestbbs lovers, notice the team listing on the about page :-)

What I noticed was that you are still crediting WestHost on the about page ;)

Anyways, I don't know who was on that list and what changed. What happened?
