My wife suggested I get out of her hair and go grab a hotel near the airport tonite, I'm so pumped about going :).
Not in new orleans yet, most'll probably arrive tomorrow throughout the day.
We've been having 90+ (F) every day with high humidity. It can feel quite oppressive. I would recommend cool and casual for anyone coming to New Orleans this week.
We typically settle into a pattern of afternoon showers that cools things off, but that has not really happened yet. The following is as of 11 AM:
Temp: 85°
Dew Point: 67°
Humidity: 55%
Wind: NNE 9 mph
Visibility: 10.0 miles
Pressure: 30.07 in.
Sky: Clear
Heat Index: 88°
One thing - in New Orleans, if anyone asks "Do you want your sandwich dressed?" that means lettuce, tomato, etc. And if any young kids in the French Quarter tell you,"I bet I can tell you where you got those shoes," don't take the bait. Their answer will be "on your feet," and you've been hustled.
It took a few tries to get the room right, but the front desk was helpful and quick to switch when I wasn't satisfied. One of the first I was given smelled damp and musky. This one is clean and has the right bed size.
If you didn't bring your own CAT5 you can just ask the front desk and they'll be happy to give you one.
If you use your debit card, watch for an additional authorization of $50 per day on your card. There's $200 I guess I won't be spending on the trip. :-)
I just checked in about 30 min ago and the hotel was not full yet. Hope everyone gets in, and I feel bad for whoever gets the cat room I had.
See you all on the floor tomorrow!
PS... need more restaruant recommendations... mid pricerange but good food.

We have eaten at Cafe Maspero at the corner of Toulouse and Decatur (pronounced dee-kator) - fast service, great food and excellent prices including a $1 strawberry daquiri (but don't expect to taste the alcohol or feel it *grin*)

I unplugged the phone and put the cord in my computer modem, kept trying to get my dial up to work. The front desk sends a guy up who tells me they have no high speed internet and he hooks me up through this wayport thing on the desk and tells me it is dialup.
Parking is wonderful, it is right across the street and across the street from the lot on the other side is the housing projects. Wonder if I will still have a car in the morning.
People next door are loud. If it's one of you HUSH! Think they should take those kids next door and give them the cat room!
My final room feels like home: cozy and clean. I turned the desk around so that I can see the TV and my laptop monitor in the same view as is my custom. The channel lineup is pretty good. I feel like I could work in this spot indefinitely.
A standard network cable is key. The connection to the Internet is very fast - similar to cable modem; it seems faster than DSL. They give the cables out freely at the front desk if you ask. The one they gave me was shrink wrapped.
If you end up in the cat or diaper rooms or others that are sure to be like them, call and go right back to the front desk. They were very quick to assign new rooms. I hope that holds.
