I think my IP address has been banned by WebmasterWorld

Don't know why

For whatever reason, I think my IP address (I have a broadband connection) has been banned by WebMasterWorld. I can only reach the site from my home computer using an anonymous surfing service. My wife is posting this for me from her work place.

If someone could send me an email (my address should be in my profile) to help rectify this situation it would be greatly appreciated. I miss WebMasterWorld!

I can think of no reason whatsoever why my personal IP address would be banned.

I can't see anything even remotely close to your ip that is blocked.

What is the error msg you are getting?

Were you, per chance, trying to get in under a frameset. If you were IE wouldn't let you login because you were sending "3rd party" cookies onto you PC and it would block it. It also stops you retrieving cookies too.

This can happen when you went onto a site which iframed or framed ww like Ask.

Access it directly here [webmasterworld.com] and then try.

No framesets. Just using the bookmark I've always used.

The error says "The page cannot be displayed" at the top followed by a list of instructions and "Cannot find server or DNS error" at the bottom.

It may be your problem not ww's ;)

Go To Tools --> Internet Options --> Advanced --> Uncheck SHOW FRIENDLY HTTP ERROR MESSAGES

A different message will come up with the reason. If it's a server error it will say and come back with what it says

Else:

Refresh the website and see if that works and run a virus scan and delete anything suspicious.

Negative on the virus and spyware scan.

Unchecking SHOW FRIENDLY HTTP ERROR MESSAGES returns the same error message.

I still think this is an IP address issue. Here's why...

Sometime in December I think, WebmasterWorld disappeared and I assumed they had closed up shop (for a while). I guess I should ask if WW went offline for a while because maybe it has been my problem all along?

But then when I got Brett's newsletter early in the month I got all excited but, for me, the site still wouldn't load and still doesn't unless I surf anonymously.

At first I suspected it was a browser or firewall setting. I have four browsers installed on my computer but none of them could access WW (WW is also the only site I have this problem with). This went a long way in eliminating the browser as the source of the problem in my mind.

I also have three networked computers using this IP address using 2 different software firewalls and none of the computers can access WW. So much for the firewall theory.

That leaves my hardware firewall which I never touch because I don't know what I'm doing regarding such devices.

Just to be thourough I still checked all the browser and firewall settings I could think of with no luck.

Sure seems like an IP address issue to me. But hey, when it comes to computers I get it wrong all the time :)

BTW cmatcme, thanks for trying to help.

Is your server NTL? WW and them don't seem to mix.

Here's [webmasterworld.com] why!

I don't think so. What's NTL?

Nope, not using an NTL server.

I'm wondering how Brett would know my IP address. Are they regionally specific?

Contact your ISP and report this problem. The error message said there was a DNS error, and that is what this sounds like. If you want to be thorough, run your spyware removers and check your 'hosts' file, too.

DNS is a distributed system. It is possible that your ISP has 'lost' WebmasterWorld's IP address.

Try this, not sure if it will help tho, go to start -> run -> type in cmd if you are using win 2k to XP, command if you are using anything below

When you get the command prompt, type in ipconfig/flushdns and then try it.

It sure sounds like a dns problem on your end, not an issue with WebmasterWorld.

Here's a way to not fix the problem, but will make it work:

locate a file called 'hosts', located here:
Windows 95/98/Me c:\windows\hosts

Windows NT/2000/XP Pro c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Windows XP Home c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

and add this line (just open it up with notepad and edit it)
64.33.51.156 www.webmasterworld.com

That will ignore your dns problem (not fix it!) and just tell your computer to go ahead and find WebmasterWorld at the right spot.

Thanks wheel, that worked.

I called my ISP 2 days ago and their tech couldn't access WW either so at this point I'm assuming it has something to do with them. they have yet to get back to me with a resolution but on the bright side, I learned a neat trick.

Thanks to everyone else as well.

Check your hosts file from time to time. Certain trojans and viruses can make changes to it.

That neat trick is also how the spammers and scammers can re-route you to fake websites too.

My IP address was also banned. I recently moved into this property around Jan 2005, made a few posts and was banned or something, and I'm thinking this is a bit rude actually.

My ISP is fine and works well etc. I had to register again to even read posts.

What gives?

I only made about 4 posts and I got banned.

Doesn't WebmasterWorld delete inactive accounts after 30 days or something? Might explain the second case.

Ahhhhh. I sees now lol. k.

My current IP address thingy seems to let me post okay, so I'll try and make as many posts as I can to keep it active.

Although I couldn't find any info about account expiry in the Terms of Service. No worries.

That's cool!

Cheers.

If we ban an ip, you get a standard apache "access forbidden" message.

Can't remember what the message was, but is all okay now anyway.

I've been making a few posts to keep account active.

Cheers now
