Guys, I don't think we want to get back in the recipe dumps of 2002 when when had dozens of food and recipe threads ;-)Foo is for the tech related ;-)
You lock a recipe thread, while at the same time you've got thread about what to properly call ice hockey [webmasterworld.com] still open? Sports are somehow more tech-related than cooking?
What about all these other TOTALLY non-tech-related threads that were never touched?
[webmasterworld.com ] (Friday Word Game)
[webmasterworld.com ] (Adopting a baby)
[webmasterworld.com ] (Limericks)
[webmasterworld.com ] (non-tech Latin translation)
[webmasterworld.com ] (Fun cars)
[webmasterworld.com ] (Bands getting ripped off)
[webmasterworld.com ] (Superbowl predictions)
[webmasterworld.com ] (DG's baby goats)
[webmasterworld.com ] (Deep sea life found)
[webmasterworld.com ] <--(Star Trek cancelled, posted by Brett himself)
And that's only since Feb. 3rd...
...what's the deal? Sports, trivia and television is OK, but cooking isn't? Is it time to revise the "banned subjects" list for FOO and add "food" to religion, race, gender and politics?
But if you're interested, I'm sure I could find a way to slip you the recipe, either here or elsewhere. ;)
That said, if you want members to think of you as a fair and reasonable "authority figure," rules need to either be applied consistently, or they need to be changed to reflect actual practice.
If FOO is for "tech-related" subjects only, then TV shows, sporting events, holidays, movie reviews, non-tech news article links, birth announcements, wedding announcements and the like (to name a few topics I've seen thriving in FOO in the past) must all be disallowed as well.
Some people's hobbies may be watching sporting events or SciFi movies and TV shows, which is fine. I generally don't watch TV or sports, so I avoid those threads. Other people's hobbies may involve cooking, and if your interests don't lie there, don't read those threads. That's how FOO used to work, anyhow...
...and judging from the level of participation from Mods and Members alike in the now-disallowed(?!) recipe threads, I'd say cooking enjoys at least as much interest among the WebmasterWorld crowd as the Superbowl does.
a) our tag line mission is news and discussion for the independent web professional. aka: the webmaster.
b) we wish to give existing members as much latitude as possible, but at the same time remain a tech/webmaster site.
c) we can't be usenet, yahoo groups, or even ivillage.
We simply don't have the require bandwidth or system investment available.
We can support a few cooking theads, a few farming threads, and even a few "how's the weather in Alaska". However, what do we do when we start to attract the professional cook, that simply wants to talk about cooking and has no idea what a webmaster is or does?
A some point along that lines, we have to roll back and get a little closer to tech related and webmaster related. There are plenty of cooking sites, and plenty of farming sites, but this one is about webmasters and running websites.
When I started Foo on SearchEngineWorld, it was started as a place where we could discuss about tech life that didn't really fall under other categories.
So, a couple changes will be made again to Foo (off active list, no post count for posters, and the majority of threads no indexed by se's)
But I do remember a chap called Chef-Brian, who turned into quite an expert in the affilate area with all the knowledge he gained here. Enough of an expert in fact that he eventaully quit his day job as a chef.
Big mistake BT. Big, Huge.

You already have the above covered.
Got questions or comments regarding your site not covered in another board? [webmasterworld.com]
what do we do when we start to attract the professional cook, that simply wants to talk about cooking and has no idea what a webmaster is or does?
So what would you of done if Captain Kirk had dropped in for a quick chat while on a mission to save the universe on the thread what you had started, would you of closed the thread or listened to his latest problems?
I am not a trekkie nor do I like the super bowl but I have got nothing against anyone who does enjoy these things, but likewise respect other peoples point's of view...
<added> If bandwidth is an issure try removing the crap and the noise from forum 3, that should save 1000 times more than a few threads in Foo will make </added>
So, a couple changes will be made again to Foo (off active list, no post count for posters, and the majority of threads no indexed by se's)
was already the way things were, but it's not unusual for me to be mistaken....

Red herring Brett.
A.) There aren't a ton of cooking threads in FOO at the moment. There was ONE post about cooking rabbit, and it was locked, with the false argument that it was locked BECAUSE Foo is for tech-related subjects, when about a third of the current active threads were in no way tech related.
B.) If FOO attracted professional cooks, it would in no way hurt the rest of the board, because the professional cook wouldn't be going over starting trouble in the Google forums.
C.) AND if all FOO threads are noindex, that could never happen, because the fearsome cooking threads would never show up in the SERPs in the first place.
So make FOO 100% noindex, and let us discuss our hobbies whether they personally interest you or not. Problem solved, everyone happy, the integrity of WebmasterWorld not threatned by the fact that it's members have lives outside the internet.
I was going to start a non related thread about late winter travel, is it likely to get the same treatment?
I wonder how many other people are thinking the exact same thing about a whole bunch of other non-tech topics? Since I started this thread, I've heard (privately, obviously) from more than one person who's not feeling as "welcome" here because of this. FOO is one of the big parts of the "community" aspect of WebmasterWorld that made it really stand out from the crowd... All work and no play makes WebmasterWorld a dull boy.
@pendanticist: Love it! lol
It's easy to complain about change. However, we are all webmasters here. If we don't like something, we are free to start our own forum and try to be as successful as BT. If you succeed, then more power to you.
