Hawkgirl, no matter how long I see it, I won't like it unless I like it, no matter who tells me I will. ;)
The core issues won't change, even if I look at it for 10 years. One of the main issues is that the text on the right is too large in relation to the globe graphic on the left. It is a matter of white space, proportion and image management. The size proportion and relationship between the URL text on the right and the globe graphic on the left sends a message, and it needs to be the right one.
As it is, there's an element of being overly ostentatious. Not that I'm a logo designer because I'm certainly not, but I'd personally make that text on the right side smaller, to avoid people getting the wrong impression.
But Marcia's right - the neg space is cramped in the b&w one....
Maybe a contest? I'm pretty sure there's some good graphics folks on here.
And the new "said logo" can be found where? ( haven't seen it yet
Leosghost,
I think you are one of the many people with access to the supporters forum, if you are it is the place where it is always there: just below the breadcrumbs links at the top right of the page.

screen type CRT 17" 1024 x 768 ..firefox .93 ..98II
also the "effect" of the W appearing to be bigger ( lower on line ) than the e and the o in "Webmaster" and "World" is greater in the B/W version than in the Multicolor version ...just a suggestion ..but I would tweak this if I were you ...normally "circular" or "curved based" letters such as e,o,c,s etc need to be about 3% larger ( hang over the base line ) to avoid this visual distortion ...
not being nit picky ..just my line of work ( which I'm not touting for in saying that ;)...
as you are in the USA ..where the best hand written signs are still done ..checkout any good professionally hand painted sign ..sign writers always drop these type letters a little below the baseline by making them a little "over stock " diameter ..especially when they are in an "italicised" ( actually italics is something different but ..) type style ..as this "leaning" emphasises this problem ...
I think it fits well with the ethos of this site - understated, a bit retro/classic in terms of styling, but certainly authoritative.
Like I said, we looked at many alternatives.
Grey scaling the current logo.
- we looked at well over two dozen samples from a couple of highly successful graphics designers. Some look good on a screen, but put them on a pen, a bag, a coffee cup, or a shirt, and they all lost readability.
- we look at many 2 or 3 color logos. Some we will actually be usings. These turned out pretty good.
If you have anything you'd like to suggest, please send it to me in email and I'll have a look. We spent a great deal of money working on this issue.
>You know it's been a while since we had a graphics comp.......
no long enough. heheh
> can't be a democracy
Sure it can! Just a small $1,000 each to vote ;-) lol
But no big deal, the logo is not what makes WebmasterWorld the great place it is.
</day made>
Unfortunately on the site itself it does seem a little out of place and could have been placed better from a users point of view.
As you say that the current logo doesn't translate well to grey scale perhaps you could take the background from the old logo and make it black and white and use it in the same position as the globe.
The thing to remember is that a logo can change over time just look at coca-cola, 100 years of minor tweaking to get where they are today.
