New WebmasterWorld Logo?

... I see it poping around from page to page

Is webmasterworld trying a new logo out? it's black and white with the globe and webmaster<br>world.com written on the right?

Yup - we needed a logo with fewer colors for some different uses. The main logo (upper left-hand corner of each page) is gorgeous - but with 7 colors it's difficult to use in some places.

Darn, the old one is SO much nicer - the size is nicer, too. Couldn't it be made monochromatic?

Unfortunately, the old one didn't translate well into a one-color logo.

Just let the new one grow on you - I think you'll like it after you've seen it for a while. It has really grown on me - the more I see it (especially on some of the conference give-aways!), the more I like it.

I would just like to know why Asia is conspicuously absent from this version of the logo. ;)

>>I think you'll like it after you've seen it for a while

Hawkgirl, no matter how long I see it, I won't like it unless I like it, no matter who tells me I will. ;)

The core issues won't change, even if I look at it for 10 years. One of the main issues is that the text on the right is too large in relation to the globe graphic on the left. It is a matter of white space, proportion and image management. The size proportion and relationship between the URL text on the right and the globe graphic on the left sends a message, and it needs to be the right one.

As it is, there's an element of being overly ostentatious. Not that I'm a logo designer because I'm certainly not, but I'd personally make that text on the right side smaller, to avoid people getting the wrong impression.

Well, while I think the b&w version is "okay" (that's a fairly lukewarm reaction, for me), I'd have to say it's a poor second to the color version. I understand the economics of 4 color seps as opposed to grey-scale, so it's easy to factor; color's great, but dollars talk.

But Marcia's right - the neg space is cramped in the b&w one....

Maybe a contest? I'm pretty sure there's some good graphics folks on here.

Just click around the site - you'll run into it eventually.

The thing is, with something like this, there's no pleasing everybody. Brett can't run his business as a democracy, ya know. It is what it is. Try a little zen. ;)

It could be but you'd lose the drop shadow, the logo could be achieved using line art to depict the world map with a outline block around the text to divide the text and the globe illi.

Leosghost,

I think you are one of the many people with access to the supporters forum, if you are it is the place where it is always there: just below the breadcrumbs links at the top right of the page.

just found it ..it's a bit stark and retro for my tastes ..But it's Brett's ball ..
one thing tho ..there appears to be a kerning problem on the r to l space in world ( they are very very close )
..they appear to overlap ..altho defined by a 2px border ..with the r sitting on top of the l ...

screen type CRT 17" 1024 x 768 ..firefox .93 ..98II

also the "effect" of the W appearing to be bigger ( lower on line ) than the e and the o in "Webmaster" and "World" is greater in the B/W version than in the Multicolor version ...just a suggestion ..but I would tweak this if I were you ...normally "circular" or "curved based" letters such as e,o,c,s etc need to be about 3% larger ( hang over the base line ) to avoid this visual distortion ...

not being nit picky ..just my line of work ( which I'm not touting for in saying that ;)...

as you are in the USA ..where the best hand written signs are still done ..checkout any good professionally hand painted sign ..sign writers always drop these type letters a little below the baseline by making them a little "over stock " diameter ..especially when they are in an "italicised" ( actually italics is something different but ..) type style ..as this "leaning" emphasises this problem ...

Hey, it's not too bad - I can't really see what the fuss is about. Sure, the old logo is more beautiful, but the new one is nice and simple and will print well on anything.

I think it fits well with the ethos of this site - understated, a bit retro/classic in terms of styling, but certainly authoritative.

It's probably just me, but I think everything about the whole webmasterworld look is dull and pre-21st-century, and it's even moreso with the new logo. (The new logo seems to be a permanent feature of the supporters forum now, btw.)

I'm not sure whether all that's a bad thing or not, though.

Gotta agree with Marcia on this one.

But no big deal, the logo is not what makes WebmasterWorld the great place it is. I am happy that I got my bag with *old* logo on it though;)

Well, nobody has to like it. But as I said in an earlier post, it is what it is. Y'all are thinking way too hard on this one.

It is nice to know that folks care enough to be this concerned.

Like I said, we looked at many alternatives.

Grey scaling the current logo.
- we looked at well over two dozen samples from a couple of highly successful graphics designers. Some look good on a screen, but put them on a pen, a bag, a coffee cup, or a shirt, and they all lost readability.

- we look at many 2 or 3 color logos. Some we will actually be usings. These turned out pretty good.

If you have anything you'd like to suggest, please send it to me in email and I'll have a look. We spent a great deal of money working on this issue.

no long enough. heheh

Sure it can! Just a small $1,000 each to vote ;-) lol

But no big deal, the logo is not what makes WebmasterWorld the great place it is.

I think that it will be striking when used in the right place it is very simple and very strong.

Unfortunately on the site itself it does seem a little out of place and could have been placed better from a users point of view.

As you say that the current logo doesn't translate well to grey scale perhaps you could take the background from the old logo and make it black and white and use it in the same position as the globe.

The thing to remember is that a logo can change over time just look at coca-cola, 100 years of minor tweaking to get where they are today.

Not that I want to wind anyone up ( ;) ), but, the current use of the B&W logo is not the best. Its size causes the page to render differently.

Thge word split is not ideal as it looks like the domain is world.com Apart from that, as a mono logo, it's fine.
