I used to go to Vegas about once every month or two, driving out with a friend from LA - only a few hours away. I used to take - honest! - $20 gambling money and cleaned up every time on nickel slots and "Wheel of Fortune."
There is LOADS to do in Vegas, especially for cheapskate gluttonous individuals who love buffets, especially seafood buffets. The nice part is that they pump oxygen through the casinos so you don't hardly need any sleep at all, which is a total waste of time. It also oxidizes the booze, which is a bonus.
Those who drive out from Calif. are the only ones who get to see this road sign - a real place, too

I've always pronounced it zeezix, but never looked up the correct pronunciation and was never inclined to stop by and see the place. The reason I remember it is because it's right near what a friend I used to make the trip with called "Boobs Mountain" which is nothing more than two boring unvegetated hills right next to each other. Definitely not worth driving to see, especially when fare is only $29 from Los Angeles with flights leaving every hour for a 45 minute flight.
One thing I have to say is that driving in at night - or even flying in at night, when it's pitch dark, when you first get the first glimpse of that lit up spectacle of Vegas in the middle of sheer darkness surrounding it's absolutely breath-taking, especially the very first time. And that's from a city gal raised in NY who's accustomed to city lights.
I would definitely suggest flying in when it's dark, especially for country folks - if it's still the same as it was years ago. There's an awesome sense of excitement that's generated by that sight.
