I cannot see post counts any more. If this is on purpose I think it may be good.

They still show in the profiles. I think I like it too. Only drawback I can think of is not knowing when to extend a welcome message to first time posters.

Join date might be an indicator.

Might be a bit confusing for newcomers to the board. Expect an increase in the number of 'how do you get to become a senior' posts.

Deters those who get their jollies by watching their post numbers rise, sometimes by simply cranking out 'me too, me too' stuff.

Deprives others of an appreciation of just how knowledgable, helpful or just plain chatty another member is.

Earth shattering change in WW policy executed unilaterally, arbitrarily and without prior notice.

But I'll get over it ;-)

Perhaps a "New to Webmaster World" note on first post might encourage a welcome message?

I was looking at the post count/membership "level" just the other day. Trouble is, it's becoming more difficult to identify the most experienced members, who have been posting for a long time and frequently. I mean, the highest level is Senior Member, and even I'm likely to get that soon - and I've only been here for about 5 minutes (it seems). With the volume of traffic on the forum, an assiduous poster can go "Senior" in a couple of months.

The way I'd prefer it is if the level corresponds not only to the post count, but also the length of time, and that the Senior level is, for example, reserved if you've been posting for at least a year and that you've made at least 1000 (or even 1500) posts. It would make it easier to pick out the most valuable replies in a long thread (of course, a new user can make a valuable comment, but you get a higher degree of usefulness out of those who've stuck around). Otherwise, some sort of system where you can choose to highlight posts by certain members or for members with a certain post-count or "length of service", or at least up the post count limits for each level to something more respresentative...

We turn them off from time-to-time. This is one of those times.

Just noticed them gone and I miss them already :(

Not that I place a lot of stock in them in terms of assessing the quality of a post myself -

but I do pay attention to them when I reply to a question from someone else. If they're a lower post count I often make a bit more detailed reply or might be more likely to refer them to the tools at searchengineworld explicitly.

Brett, due you turn it off for performance reasons?

>performance reasons

Yes, members perform better when they are more concerned about the quality of their posts than the quantity of their posts.

What's REALLY interesting is that between the time they "went missing" and the time they became "re-found", my count seems to have balloned by maybe 150 posts?

Odd....

[because I didn't notice when they left, nor when they returned, I might have actually made that many posts. But I would tend to doubt it, honestly....]

They were found missing by troels on 6:48 am July 16, 2004 (+12GMT).

They were then "found" again (maybe a "test" click by Brett on his wicked new computer but hey) by me on 3:11 am July 17, 2004 (+12GMT).

So according to my calculations, we literally "lived" without post counts (except on profiles) for more than 20 hours - oh god, imagine what would've happened to those new members between that time...

vkaryl, yours looks about right, I noticed yours just recently; I think there is an extra point given every time the word schmuck is used. ;)

That said, they all look normal to me, just about like they were before the blackout.

Heh. Thanks Marcia. Obviously I need to keep my fingers OFF the keyboard. *laughing* Odd though, since I really seem to post more in the places one DOESN'T get counted for.... *shrug* I just don't pay too much attention I guess.
