Using 'e-mail a friend' feature

does the recipient need to subscribe to read post?

This is difficult for me to test easily, so I'm asking.

I've twice now sent a post to a friend using the 'E-mail a friend' and they said they'd need to be a sunscriber to read it! But I thought that surely they'd be able to read a thread without signing up - some people are paranoid about subscribing to things.

So can a new user read threads here as a guest?
