i've been doing html for years, working with perl for several and php for about one. one thing i love to do is take a script and make it into something totally different. for example, i took a 'add to my links' script and changed it into a 'my current mood' script. but often i get stuck on trying to create or modify one single function. the latest one was figuring out how to pull one single line from a database. should have been simple, but not for one who has never seen the coding before. i worked on it for hours (really) and finally got it working like i wanted it to.

so, am i alone in this? i tend to exhaust myself before asking certain things. while i feel great at finishing that function, i could have asked earlier and been done with it.

btw, it was for a personal website so no work hours were lost.

You're not totally alone, we're two at least. My personal website is like my training object, where I try out many new ideas and develop the code, most of the time in a mix of trial-and-error, reading in my books and checking various online resources.
My current thing is a database-based photogalerie with a web-interface to add descriptions to the pictures.

I'll add my two into the mix. I was going over some old xsl stuff, and I needed to change the dynamic link 1-whatever thingy. LOL! I didn't document at all, and when I started on it, jeez! It took me a while.

might be a bit off topic
