From a language/font viewpoint, the "CJK" (China, Japan, Korea) region is sometimes separated from the rest of "single-byte" Asia.
ANZ is culturally and business-wise a fairly homogenous region. SE/PPC-wise, we have a subset of the majors, sometimes with slightly different feeds, and some home-grown solutions. I have a selfish interest in seeing ANZ on its own, but I accept that it doesn't generate enough traffic on WW. I am happy to stay in a "Rest of APAC" region, as it would be mostly English-language or Latin character set countries.
Japan probably warrants a spin-off before any of the other sub-regions in APAC.

Splitting into subsets is always in my mind, but to be honest, I don't see the traffic to warrant it at the moment, perhaps in the future. I am not sure splitting via Language Sets would work either, consider Hong Kong where both Cantonese and English is spoken. Also the Philippines, India, and so on. CJK is probably a good subsetm but then where do you place Thailand? And again the Philippines with Tagalog and English. Regional subsets would probably work better a la the (way overdue for overhaul) Asia Pacific Overview.
Perhaps there are other options for making specific regions more accessable, something also in my mind.
I'll see what I can come up with. Thanks Ash!

I agree with Woz. There really isn't enough traffic to warrant a split. Asia/Pacific is one of the smallest forums on WebmasterWorld. I can't imagine how tiny it would be if we started splicing it up.
...an update of the Asia Pacific Overview would be a nice way to invigorate some of the regional activity Woz...nudge, nudge ;)
